I think my new horse has thrown a splint. It is on the outside of his back leg. Is it possible to have a splint on the outside of the leg or is it possible it is just a swelling that will go. I'm gutted as i had hopes of him being a show horse!

It's probably 3 inches long by 2 inches wide and doesn't feel particularly hot to touch. Is there anything I can put on it to help!?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can have the on the outside of the back leg on the splint bone, not usually as big as that. The good news is I had a pony who got splints there and I showed him at a high level and not one judge mentioned or even seemed to notice them. edit Higher up than you have just put though, he's not had a kick has he? That doesn't sound like the right position for a splint.

Thanks for the replies. I'm wondering if he has had a kick as there is a little bald patch further up on the front of the hock. I'm wondering now if they are connected. Fingers crossed the swelling will go and it will disappear. I am getting the vet out to him for his jabs so I may ask him then.

Good idea to get it checked. It's a common place to get a kick and if you've not had him long presumably he's with other horses he doesn't know well so they could well be squabbling as he settles into his place in the group.

Yes he is with my other two horses both are 18 and like to think they are top of the pecking order. I watch the one horse chase him off so they haven't completely settled yet. They have been together since end of May.
