Now Bo is doing more and getting out and about, his little mini shetland friend is being left on her own a lot more than I'm comfortable with.

She's OK, as in she doesn't object or get upset, but I worry about her and I don't like it.

Where best to look for a little companion?

I'm thinking either another mini, standard shetland or a small welsh A. All I see for sale are colts.

In an ideal world it would be a gelding (Bo would be insufferable if he had 2 mares!), and young/sprightly enough to play with Bo. Able to be walked out for exercise would be good.

I realise I'm looking for something quite specific so not sure where to start.

(I use a trimmer which means most charities won't consider me)

I bought mine from someone who bought him from the sales on Shetland. I think there are Shetland sales coming up soon so worth looking out for. I was even more specific in that he had to be a gelding and not a youngster. It's surprising how difficult middle aged Shetland geldings are to find! My little dude is amazing, totally unspoilt but easy going and I'm very pleased I found him.

Thanks. I hadn't considered the sales but that could be an option.

Depending on where you are I might know of something looking for a new home. Think he's 3/4 bought by a novice family for grandkids but he's a bit to in your face for tiny tots. He's 11hh ish and I believe a dartmoor him pony. He's roan. I'll get more details if you are interested. He just needs some boundaries put in place. He walks out OK and longreins he's worn tack and had a tiny tot plonked on. He doesn't appear to be fazed by much.

RSPCA Gonsall Farm have/had a 7hh mini gelding up for rehoming. I was sorely tempted even though I don't need one. Don't know what their policy is on trimmers vs farriers though.

Dragon Driving always have small ponies and often sensibly priced. Loads of welsh. I found my last companion on there.

Have you tried the blue cross? They have a few small geldings, I know you said charities weren’t happy with a trimmer but maybe worth trying them
Good call. One of mine was from the Blue Cross, He wasn't on the website but they showed him to me when i went to enquire about another one. So even if they don't have what your looking for it might be worth asking. I'm not sure if they asked about farrier/trimmers

Are you on Facebook?
I’d put a little wanted post specifying exactly what you’re after on a local horsey page. I’d imagine you’d get a lot of replies.
I have what you’re after but sadly he’s the only one who really gets on with the little old mare I have here so he’s pretty vital at the moment!

Good idea! We have a few pages covering our area.

Sounds good though suspect they want more than 'companion pony' money for him. Dartmoors are a good call though!

I'm on the West Yorkshire/Derbyshire border.

I did wonder if they might be worth a call.

Blue Cross do seem to be a bit more flexible on other things, so they might be OK about it.

I've always shied away from DD, but will have a look!

My little chap was on preloved. I tried jumping through hoops with one charity first until they told me they expected their valueless pony insuring for at least £3 grand of vet fees.

My companion has an RSPCA passport so I can say he's a rescue pony if I want to play benevolent, but he was really just bargain bucket. 😁 Seriously though, I'm glad I own him, I'm not a borrower/good sharer and he's a cool little mate for my arab and I.

There are definite downsides to loaning from charities for sure.
