Hi there,
My Niece has a little 14.2hh gypsy cob. He has never been rugged but she would like to rug him.
I don't rug mine anymore so I am well out of the picture as to what rugs are good these days.

What rugs are a nice fit on this type of pony?
What filling would you use?

Thanks

There are two at the end of our village unrugged & as happy as larry!
I'd have thought a lightweight to keep him dry if he's unclipped.

My gypsy cob (in avatar) only has two types of rugs - rainsheets - premier equine & old Shires rug and 2 mw from Kingshead. If I had to buy her a new rug would definately look at Premier Equine first as she has a big chest and shoulders so even though she is only 15hh she needs a 6'6" rug! their rugs are also good quality and value for money - or of course there is always ebay!

I'll second premier equine, fits really well around the chest where her other rugs slip back. She also has a shires stable rug that fits really nicely

Amigo medium weight. Will fit, won't move. won't be too heavy. (As recommended by Oscar..........!)

That solves that then. Do they sell them in Mole Valley?

My gypsy cob is just over 15 hands and is slightly narrower than some as he has a streak of TB back somewhere in him. Is yours the "draw a square box round" type as these often need larger than average rugs.

Mine is rugged - he is full clipped as he gets very hot when worked and I also show.

At the moment he has an amigo on - you sometimes need a size up as they are not as generous as some round the neck.

He has a shires summer typhon which fits well. The weatherbeeta landas are also good fits. He has premier equine fly rug - again good sized chest and neck.

If he is not clipped you won't need anything more than an unfilled rug even in the depth of winter. Chancer had this as a youngster just to keep the worst of the rain off him and was plenty warm enough.

Merlin (in my siggy) has two turn-out rugs - a Weatherbeeta and an Upland. But he hasn't worn either of them for the last couple of winters, and is much happier naked. He's got the thickest coat on the yard, and looks like a bear ATM.

I've got hairies, and I would be pretty careful about rugging at the moment. At the moment I guess you have a really fluffy hairy that is doing fine thank you very much. If you put a lightweight rug on that then you will flatten down the hair and reduce the natural insulating ability of the fur. If you put a thicker rug on you run the risk of over-heating the little munchkin - honest you do. This weather isn't really that bad for hairy toughies, I think they struggle most in cold, wet and driving wind. In this weather they tend to be happy as larry, with a coat of snow on their backs that proves how well insulated they are.
Here's my little hairy one, taken this weekend before the snow came. She's never been rugged and unless she gets ill or clipped she isn't going to need it.

My fat cob is wearing either a Fal Cheiftan with 40g fill or Weatherbeeta Landa rain sheet and is out at night (he is unclipped). Mark Todd also fit him well.

They do indeed !!

Oscar has more rugs to his name than the average tack shop has in stock.........the Amigo ticks all the boxes, which is more than can be said for some of the more expensive brands that he's been brought over the years !!

I totally agree with you.
I have recommended they don't start rugging until the beginning of next winter.
I don't like rain sheets because they do just what you said they do and anything thicker is probably going to cook him right now.
I understand them wanting to rug. It does make life easier. I am more of the thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it but he isn't my pony!

Thank you everybody for the suggestions.
I will pass them on to my niece and she can have the joy of choosing.
Thank you for your time.
