H&H cover story (Thurs 14th Sept) SJ story.

Ok if you look at the H&H homepage you can see tomorow's front cover and in turn the main story other than Burghley is 'Arko's brother is bought secretly for Britain'

So basically is this a full or half brother who is it who bought it and who riding it?!

Anyone know the gossip or do we have to wait till tomorrow morning :lol:

indeed but in this case its a full brother! exciting news but obviously we wont see it in action for a few years yet.

I thought he was a bit loose in front with one of his legs in that picture

No doubting he has a jump though, and you can't really tell anything from a single photo after all.

Poor foal; weaned on the day of the sale, taken to the sale, jumped over fences, taken home then shipped over to the UK!
Don't know if this is all standard with all top foals but the poor thing is only 5 months!

Yes, I know nothing about foals, but was surprised to see him weened on the same day he was sold. I think he's at a secret location in Holland at the moment though, so not been shipped to the UK yet.

Probably why the likes of Arko have joint troubles..

Yes talk about putting pressure on something young. Will be interesting to see if this foal makes it to 8 years old without problems. The pressure they put on Arko is so intense. Bet this will be jumping round 1.20 courses before it is even 4.

They just don't look right to me (as in ethical) for a foal that age to be going through that sort of thing. Wean them by all means at 5months or so but to make the poor animals jump like that is almost to the point of cruel

I know they play & climb in the paddocks but...words fail me

I don't have any problems with the free jumping; done properly and not on a regular basis I don't think will harm them (especially considering the manuoveres some foals pull off in the paddock.) I just hope that when he arrives they let him finish growing up before they start the serious work.

This foal will be a 6yr old by the time the London Olympics come round. If he's made the Foxhunter final by then he'll have defied all the odds. This is one for the 2016 Olympics at best

Yes it's wonderful that JH has put his money where his mouth is and yes it's great to have Arko's Full brother in the UK, BUT, I ask you, just how many times does lightening strike twice with the same mare? Look up racing bloodlines, it's a rare thing and they aren't pushed at 5 months either!!

Sorry, but to wean any earlier than 6 months for anything other than a physical reason (mare or foal) is IMO just wrong. I know there are a few exceptions to this, but I feel really sorry for those babies!! IMO the sale should be during Oct/Nov....

Good point...yes your right with racing it seems like there is an average of only1 or 2 good foals for every 8 foals produced by a dam??( that is what Ive seen, not sure I am right!!)

If you go to the catalogue link, there are some videos of some of the foals being sold....watch them...they look pathetically young and small, and still very much in need of their mother- they are all moving very closely to their mums and needing her protection.I think that it is only after 6 months of age that foals start to show that they are naturally independent from their dams and start distancing themselves from her?and that is when you know that they are ready to be weaned? Sorry dont know much about breeding!!

I agree, a foal needs to be at least six months before any sort of jumping gets tried, and it is so easy to damage themselves when so young.
We normally see if ours can jump the day they are put into the Deer park which has a small stream running through it. By that time they are normally almost ready for weaning at 6 months. They always gallop off following their dams who are planning on going through the park and up to the top fields where the good grass is. Anything going to jump really well clears that stream out of it's stride and with a lovely jump, landing lightly on the other side. the not so good ones either plough through it or just jump over...
