A few years back I remember an outcry about mares being kept in stalls and pregnant and foals being disposed of just so people could have H.R.T. I also seem to remember it could be produced synthetically. Is it still the same ,is it cruel?

There's hardly any of the farms left here in Canada. The majority of them lost their contracts about 2 years ago. These contracts were never renewed with other farms as synthetics took off.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the news this evening. They use Belgium Draft mares urine dont they to collect hormones for women going through the menapause.

It saddens me now to think of those lovely Mares in the stalls whilst they are useful. I have seen awful pictures on the PETA website.

Their foals are also sent to slaughter, according to PETA year in year out.

It does sound a similar thing

Oh and me. Having owned 2 PMU mares I can tell you that they are deeply affected by their experiences there. Not nice at all.

Don't believe anything PETA says. Sorry but they are just full of propaganda ....

Yes PMU units existed, yes some of them were grim, however PETA honestly is not your best resource for information.

I dont rely on the information I rely on the pictures and have reserched it in some depth. Its not just PETA either.

I never rely on words, the pictures of those lovely mares in their tiny stalls tell a thousand words. Sores all over their bottoms where they are strapped to the catheter for the urine collection.

Real sad

Well if you have researched it then you will know that it is rubbish that the foals in Canada are slaughtered nowadays.

I'm not arguing with you. Your research is quite obviously not as sharp as you would like to think.

I owned 2 Pregnant Mare Urine horses

I have owned a few Pregnant Mare Urine foals

I am friends with a Pregnant Mare Urine unit owner

I know what goes on there and I know what has happened in regards to all Pregnant Mare Urine facilities in Canada

I know that Canada was the largest producer of Pregnant Mare Urine

I also know that only a tiny percentage of these Pregnant Mare Urine units are still in operation until their contracts finally run out in about a years time.

I petitioned against these Pregnant Mare Urine units and after huge public opinion the Govt was forced to withdraw acceptability for these farms.

Then they will be no more in Canada.

You say potatoe I say patatoe

Oh and no I don't say either of those - I say potato - just the way it is supposed to be said.

Thats great news Tia but I think the poster wanted to know if HRT collection was cruel and was it used in England

You have gone off the beaten track.

Im pleased Canada does not have this problem and commend you for your good work in this area

As I said words and abbreviations do not paint a true picture
This cruelty goes on I make reference to European countries, not Canada. Conditions in Europe for animals are well below par compared to England, for this reason alone I am glad we have yet to join the European Union

And Tia I knew you would say the last bit Potatoe, Potatoe but it is late hear and I could not be so creative as to make it known I had deliberately mispelt the word for prounciations sake

That does not concern me
Hosses welbeing does[another spelling mistake]lol

Oh! Gosh and here was me thinking that the poster was interested in Hormone Replacement Therapy produced within Pregnant Mare Urine facilities.

I must have been wrong therefore I'll bow out and you can take over and pass on your "research" to the poster.

Tia dont make me laugh Im too tired

Have enjoyed the discussion tonight

There has been good input on both sides

As I said the pertition you did was very commendable

Please dont be sarcastic

You've got smileys I aint

The links posted are showing pictures which are decades out of date. Sorry but I cannot bear when someone asks for FACTS and are given incorrect and sorely out of date "findings".

I shall post an informative link which should explain most of what the original poster may be interested in - facts. PLEASE do bear in mind though that this link only goes up until the farms were pretty much disbanded - this is because there is NO fight anymore. The battle was won. There are no more contracts given to Wyeth to produce PMU on our Continent.

http://www.premarin.org/

As far as I am aware it was only Canada and the States where PMU facilities existed. Wyeth was the only company in the world to manufacture this however they have now lost their accredibility and will have no supplies within 2 years - but Ranchgirl has highlighted a new one on me...in that Wyeth have moved to Europe now?? I am astonished to say the least! I would be very very interested to know where these farms are Ranchgirl - please provide literature. Having once participated in the petition which has signed the death warrant on this practice in this country I would be more than happy to hear about another petition happening elsewhere in the world.

How disgusting are humans at times in their endevours to make money!

http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/apr02/s041502d.asp

According to avma (April 15, 2002) there were 422 of these farms in Canada and North Dakotawith over 37,000 brood mares. I hope it has stopped now because that is just abhorrent & I am sure that most women would have been horrified if they had known these facts.

Since there are approximately 431 current Canadian and U.S. PMU farms (but only 308 producing farms as of 11/1/03). Taken from http://www.premarin.org

Just to come in a bit late to this one. I always understood that PMU stood for pregnant mares urine. After all pre-menstrual urine doesn't really make sense as the mares aren't premenstrual! To answer OP, yes I would say it is definitely cruel but as Tia says synthetics will hopefully totally replace the mares urine very soon.
