Haas brushes...I guess you could say he's kind of shiny!

Not atm as am at work but it comes up time and time again and the geneticists on the genetics groups are forever reiterating that it is not an indicator.

Yes, I know. But they don't back it up with science. I've asked them to in the past for both ear hair and eye colour but they can't. One group admin even gave me a warning for asking these questions so I left the group as am not interested in participating in groups where people get shouted down for asking valid questions. I'd be really interested if anyone could back up these claims that hetrozygous cream has no effect on ear hair colour or eye colour because my own experience says otherwise. But obviously, I can't back it up either as I can't find any studies either way. So until I do find a study, I will continue to believe that hetrozygous cream does affect ear hair colour and eye colour, but not in every case. I do think it is a good indicator to test for cream.

I'll see if I can find it later. I think the main point is that there is such cross over in phenotype that it is potentially of no real use as an indicator. I'm not sure what BBP's parentage is.

Isn't this just clever marketing do you really need a different coloured set for each horse? Maybe because people are buying the sets they spend more time grooming than previously.

I think there may be something in it but it is more complex.

Having had coloured horses and a friends leopard spot, the texture of hair in the patches or spots is different to the white background. The colour bits are sleeker and the white bits around fluffier. In fact with my friends spotted, you could feel the spots with your eyes closed. Also people find as they go grey and their hair loses pigment, it becomes coarser.

However even if colour is one factor, breed/type will also have a impact with a native having a thicker/coarser coat than an arab for example.

It's probably better to think of coats as thin/fine,coarse, fluffy, prone to getting dusty, oily or scurfy and use that as a guide.

And I suspect the grey pack has a brush that is especially good at getting dirt out so you could identify that and just get that.

I have a 15 yo Stubben brush that I bought in France. I have never found another as good; it brings an enormous shine up on every horse. Seeing these Haas reviews has made me very happy as I would imagine they will be as good and I can finally add some more brushes to my collection of 1 that I use on every horse, every day of the year for 15 years lol!

What sort of parentage details do you need Ester? The colours of his parents? His sire is described as a black PRE (seems the same colour as BBP in the photos they sent me). Grandsire on that side was bay, grand-dam on that side was grey. On dams side, his dam was Dark Bay PRE x welsh B, grandsire was bay and granddam was grey. Everything in his passport heritage for great grand parents is black, bay or grey.

Without a dilutes parent then technically he cant be one either. But smoky black visually looks black so the dilute can be hidden. Both breeds can and do have dilutes. With none showing all the way back to great grandparents I'd put money on him being black though.

It looks most likely he is black then, unless any of the greys had cream before they greyed out, or any of the blacks were actually smoky black.

So what I said 30 min earlier then? Although its misleading to be talking about the greys having cream. Its only the grand dams that were grey, and dilute needs to come directly from a parent. So it would have to have been a grey hiding a dilute and then it being hidden as smoky black twice in grandparents and parent.

yes. See my post above :) The Schimmel in particular is very good.

Is the Schimmel ok to use on it's own? I've got the chestnut/bay pack for my chestnut. I love the brushes. No other brushes I have ever used come close. My daughter borrows them for her bay too but my other daughter has a grey. I was thinking about getting her the grey pack for Christmas but maybe I should just get the Schimmel?

The schimmel is quite coarse - more like a dandy brush. I found it a bit harsh on fine summer coats. It might come into its own during winter though!

I only bought that one and the Diva I think, then added a more standard body brush. The only one I use consistently is the schimmel. I've never known anything like it for removing dirt and stains :)

Interesting, I have been debating whether these brushes are any better than good quality natural hair brushes. Would love to see a comparison.

My bay is naturally quite shiny, I reckon I could probably get the same shine with my natural bristle body brush (don't know what brand it is as all markings bar the royal appointment one have worn off) if I could be arsed to wash it and finish off with a sheepskin or microfiber mit. But the lovely set is soooooo tempting

I've got a goats hair body brush. Its nice but it doesnt quite put the gloss on that the diva brush does. Thats got lambskin in the middle so probably explains that! Makes it quick and easy to use though

My goats hair brush *(though not as posh as Kat's) is the one I mentioned that is so soft it does nothing though the tb likes it as it is so soft. Now it's a few years old the hairs are starting to come out so it actually makes things worse.

Not that I'm trying to lead anyone astray but the link for the discounted old pack. No standard left, only deluxe or royal

Oh god, dont buy from those unscrupulous tow rags!

Have just bought the schimmel, the diva and the new revolution curry comb. Have yet to use them on my coloured mare. Got them at a really good price from theathleteshop online. Think I paid £30 for all 3

Why. I couldn't find a price that bettered the special offer either buying separately or as a pack. I ordered weds and parcelfoce have just texted a delivery time today. I suppose I could be sent entirely the wrong thing but not sure how likely that is.

Disclaimer although I say "my brush" I didn't purchase it. My husband owned a full equerry grooming kit* when we met and it now belongs to our horse. I only owned rubbish synthetic brushes previously but I am a convert now.

The water brush is brilliant too, so is the dandy though it is too rough for our sensitive horse so is used on saddle cloths etc.

*this may or may not have been a factor in my decision to go out with him 😁

I have no idea either, but they seem to have a vendetta against them from certain people on here for some reason. From what I can gather it is because they falsely claimed they were the only sellers of genuine Haas products. However, if their prices are good and they deliver the product then I am not sure why they have such a bad press on H&H.

Not that its a good comparison as all horses are so individual but the 2 coloured horses on the yard love the schimmel and really lean into you when you groom with it, the bay hates the schimmel but he is a sensitive soul but he likes the Military
All the horses seem to like the curry comb and so do I as it is so easy to hold and not all ridged and stiff
