Sorry to keep posting re this but am struggling - so want to know if anyone has found themself in my position. Have tried an english hackamore on my mare and she goes really nicely in it - no head throwing and her whole stride relaxes into it but the noseband is too narrow so that the cheekpieces are pulled up towards her eyes into the centre of her head. All the shops say that they come in one size but it looks too small - the curb chain is really tight under her chin. I have left 2 fingers space down from her cheekbones and 5 fingers from her nose so this should be correct? Has anyone else had this problem ? Otherwise am going to try the neue schule hackmore but this is more severe and I dont think she needs it.

think i will put a photo up... cant get sheepskin on as is too tight - did use a makeshift leather strap instead of chain but found her to be v strong

i use one on my horse, and have had the same problem.
On the front of my hackamore is a buckle, which adjusts.
I slackened this right off, and then tightened the curb strap- but i've wrapped the chain in vetrap as Solo doesn't like the chain.

Replace the original noseband with a decent leather strap with a good buckle, easy. That way you can get the dimensions just so. I always take my hackamore nosepieces off straight away, ugly things, replace the straps and wrap it with sheepskin.

Before I was given my beautiful big linked dressage curb chain I used a ........dare I say this? A pelham rounding as a curb strap, worked perfectly.

I have never used one with a chain. The two bought came with a leather strap back and front. I can understand why the horse wouldn't like the chain as they need to fit snugly. It would constantly dig in.

My mare had a real sheepskin noseband on the front and a noseband gel cushion on the back.
