Got a box resting horse who cut his leg and has stitches! Am feeding him a small breakfast and tea, main bulk is speedi-beet, with chaff and baileys no4 (conditioning cubes) as a dressing. It has been reduced down to a 3rd compared to his normal working intake.
Anyway what really got me was when i chatted to freind as you do, and said what hes on, her reply was... 'He is on that???' pulling horrified face as well!! She was refering to the speedi-beet!
Well IMO if its bloody good for lamanitics and is only a fiberous bulk feed how can I go wrong????
so anyone please make me feel good and tell me that I am doing good or please correct me and point out how bad speedi-beet is and that I should not be feeding it. thankyou.
 
Well i've not actually read the packaging but my baileys rep mentioned that it was full of sugar but i thought she must have made a mistake, anyway why don't you put him on stud balancer, then he's got all the nutrients he needs to heal up nicely and doesn't have too much energy, i use fibre-beet instead of speedi-beet, can't remember why lol
 
i feed speedibeet and understood that was 99% suger free, my tb has it and hes prone to laminitus, vet said was fine for him, also hes had lymphangitus so have to be really careful, vet also said was ok to fed to him, hope this helps

Personally, id have expected her reply to be regarding the conditioning cubes. There is a lot of goodness in those for a horse thats doing nothing.
I dont really agree with feeding sugarbeet, but I would think an unmolassed version would be ok for a horse on box rest.
I find that Alfa Oil, horse and pony nuts and plenty of haylage do my boxrests fine (the horse I have on box rest actually looks better than the rest at the mo

i don't feed sugarbeet, so can't comment on that..
and also would have thought your friends coment would have been about the no.4, which is something i feed when in hard work!!
My two are in work (about 1hrs walking a say tho) and are only on pony nuts!! and not that many!
I would feed a horse on box rest ad-lib hay, Alfa, and a few pony nuts to add crunch, but nothing else!
 
the con cubes are a dressing only so only meaning a handful. It was the speedi beet re comment. Which I find confusing. As the feed is basically fibre. And is on ad lib hay. I cant see what is wrong with what I am giving him. I stopped the alfa a oil due to the energy in it. I understand that too in the con cubes but like said is only a dressing.
 
What your feeding sounds absolutely fine! Speedi or similar is low in sugar so doesn't heat the horse up. And conditioning cubes can be fed to a horse in any state of work just depends on the amount, but as you say its a hanful not a prob! If your horse is happy thats the main thing!

Was the rep suggesting that the Speedibeet was "full of sugar"? How strange given it's unmollassed with nothing else added to it! And fibrebeet is just alfa and speedibeet combined.....
 
Well i was confused as well but i thought she must of made a mistake as that was the reason i was feeding it just add a bit of bulk but my colt didn't like it so trying fibre-beet instead

I am feeding speedi-beet this year as last year my horse got excitable when I added leisure nuts to his feed. Last year I ended up feeding Hi-Fi only and hay, and although his weight was OK for winter condition this year I wanted to keep the condition he put on over the summer. Anyway IMO the speedi-beet is great as it has had no effect on him mentally, but seems to be keeping his weight on.
 
when my horse was on box rest he was on speedibeet n hifi, and ad lib hay-we also didnt have any bran in at the yard on the nite of his accident so vet oked speedibeet instead.

It IS completely sugar free n full of fibre!

speedi beet excellent for all horses and ponies, we only ever feed fibre feeds, dengie etc plus a vit & min supp, too many people feed far too much cereal feeds which is not as easily digested,
 
I feed Just Grass - brill stuff as it is what it says on the tin - 3 handfuls whch I dress it with a handful of cool mix, half a bale of hay a day and I have a podgy pony!
 
Personally I would only be feeding him chaff and a handfull of very low value nuts - something like economy cubes. Even when my boy has a day off he doesn't have his usual top-line nuts the night before and the morning of his day off - they're replaced with just nuts.
