Today I was planning on hacking my horse for the first time from the new yard

I was going in company of another horse and rider who hack all the time

My horse is usually quiet to hack but not in his own

I'm a little nervous as he's never been in new roads ect

I wanted to go as early as possible but my company not going until 12:30

Now I was prepared to go and was mentally putting my brave pants on saying saying as soon as I relax he will :)

But the weather us awful
It's raining and weather warning for flooding heavy rain and up to 70 mob winds today with with testy showers in high ground

This has put me competent of as other girl is not very confident n her horse spooks a lot in wind

M thinking best for another day

Am I being a rhino should I just go in a short one?

I dint want first hack to b negative

if it was me i would leave it till it was better weather..I love being out in high wind on my old lad..but i know him and he is settled in. New horse, in new surroundings and with high wind and rain just does nt sound ideal to me!
I have to say though im not a fantastic rider and have to have a bond with a horse before i evan get on it!

If it were me and the weather is bad I wouldn't hack. As you say you don't want a negative so don't potentially set yourself up for one. Your horse will more than likely be fine but if your feeling iffy do something else today. Hopefully it won't be too long before you can go out in decent weather.

Personally i would wait till you have better weather and then go out in company, you can build on your bond with your horse by doing lots of grooming in the dry stable untill then. Just remember you have the rest of your lives together to hack so there is no need to rush. Just enjoy eachothers company. :)

Set yourself and your horse up for sucess and not failure.

There is no rush - if you pick the right conditions it'll go well and you'll have a great time, if something silly happens because of the weather you'll kick yourself for the knock in condifence that will undoubtedly happen/

This is excatly what I was thinking. I've only owned him 4 months and were getting on great. He's very honest but I dont want him to sense my nerves.
If it dries up I'll see how I feel

I have hacked him at last yard and as long as he has company he's perfect.

He's not spooky or anything but just think there's too much stacked against us to make today the best for a hack.

Thanks just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a whimp!!

There is nothing wimpish abiut assesing a situation and thinking safety. So far from be wimpish you showed commonsense. Yes no doubt in the months that follow you will head out regardless of weather but as someone else said setting yourself up to poss fail is a negative. Happy future hacks :)

I'd not go - saw 3 horses and riders out hacking yesterday afternoon when the storm hit and they were spooking all over the place, made it worse they were not wearing hi-vis on a B road but that's another issue. If the horse you are riding out with spooks in the wind and it is all new for your horse then it doesnt sound wise, after seeing the 3 fools out yesterday I really think checking the weather before you hack (I always do but didnt realise other people dont!) and making a decision based on the weather is very wise and the right decision - hacking on roads is hard enough with traffic and inconsiderate drivers, why put yourself in danger when you can easily go another day?

You are not being a wimp at all - you are being sensible and putting safety first. Definitely the right choice.

I would forget it. Neverminding the the fact that the horses will be on edge, you won't be able to hear traffic so well because of the wind, and cars won't be able to stop so easily in the wet, plus it's really dark out there, hi-viz or not. It may clear up a bit later, but think it's still going to be very windy.
Mine haven't even been out of the stables this morning, no way I would ride!!

Well I have had my boy nearly 3 years, and was intending to hack today, took one look at the weather and changed my mind!
Even good horses will be less predictable in the rotten wind and rain.

Agree, best left for another day. Me and my daughter got caught out yesterday in a massive storm. Went from mild with a light breeze to an overhead thunderstorm, pelting rain, dark as night with gale force wing in minutes, luckily we were fairly close to home. We got off and legged it home.

Thank you for all the updates
Arrived at yard told my friend I thought best to leave it
She agreed
20 mins later storm passed sunshine and blue skies
Not a grey cloud in sight . .
Checked the updated weather report said good until around 3pm

We decided to give it a go as weather was actually good
But not to go far from yard so if need be we could get back quickly

Went ten mins from yard then looped back and headed for home

I actuality really enjoyed it and my wee man was an abs angel :)

Glad my first one is out if the way

I felt more confident having someone with me
And new yard roads are very quiet
Not like busy B road I'm used too

I was wearing my high viz
Only thing that bothered me was other ppl on yards "laughing"

I dint care if rather b sad than sorry and me and my horses saftey come first !!!

No one else wears high viz alarmingly

I will b changing this

I did my riding and road saftey and wen I was signalling my friend was askin me wat I was doing and bit wearing tabard

But had high viz tendon boots on??

Don't worry about what other people say about your hi-viz, just do what you feel is best for you and your horse. As for the weather, glad you managed to get out, there was a brief spell of better weather and I managed to walk the dog, but the storms come in so quick that I decided against riding mine!!

I don't give a monkeys what the 'proper' riders might think about me and my lad going out decked out like a christmas tree! It's cheap and easy to high viz up, and may save our lifes one day, so why wouldn't you do it?

Glad to hear you managed to get out, and that it was short but sweet :) Well done!

Oh I'd never go out without my high viz!!!
Saftey first
I dont care if they all think I'm bonkers !!!
It is impossible to ignore that it greatly improves visibility for drivers.

I'm just glad we wnt out as we deemed it safe
Short but sweet best didn't want to take risks :)

Thank you for all your help.
Think ppl ( and me) sometimes think weighing up all the poss is being a whimp !! Lol

Glad you had a great ride in the end. Me, I'm a fair weather rider these days I'm afraid. Long gone are the days where I'd go out regardless, these days I have no wish to be cold and wet and I don't want my tack getting soaked either.

You used your judgment and it worked - glad all went well.
In terms of high-vis, I always think that the people who don't use it must obviously think the sun shines out of their ar$e so just have a smile to yourself with that in mind next time - you're not the daft one!
