I have recently bought my mare back into light work we are currently only hacking twice a week. She has another sec a in with her as a companion.Anyway when we are hacking she is fine on the way there on the hack and on the way back she gets really sharp and calls and start's throwing her head around and can get really foreward going. I haver tried talkin to her clamly and this hasnt worked and iv tried being firm with her but it just makes her worse.she is only 14.2 so i can jump off her but i know thats not the answer what can i do any suggestions.just to add we hack on our own and in the menage she is totally chilled.:)

Do you do circular rides or turn round and return home? My old boy used to rush and jog all the way home, if I even thought about turning round, so I used to plan a complete circular route to ensure this did not happen.

As far as getting off and walking her, tbo I don't think there is anything wrong with this, especially if this calms her down.

The main thing really is to get enjoyment out of it for both of you, so as long as you do not mind walking, then you are both happy.

If you are doing circular rides anyway, then perhaps just time and patience is the answer.

Let us know how you get on, and good luck

If i drop the reins she will try and run away i have to keep a contacts and eagle stone you have raised a very good point thinking about it we always turn around and come back and this could be thr problem.there are only 2 circular routes i can do but am limited and can only ride them on a sunday due to volume of traffic on thr road so always end up going somewhere and turning back.she is brill in traffic with motorbikes and lorries.

Our NF pony does this, takes quite a lot of bravery, but I always let him have a long rein on the way back, he starts to jog at first, but soons settles down. Its quite a skill and you have to learn to use your seat to slow them down ( sit like a sack of spuds!)
He is very forward going at all times; I have tried the stopping and circling away, but he gets more wound up.
Making him walk everywhere helps too, no trotting or cantering until he's settled and never on the way home!

Spook's like that. He rushes home, it doesn't bother me but other horses cant catch up to his walk. I normally get him to work in an outline to slow him down or if he refuses tiny little pulses with my hand and he slows down. He used to be realy bad when i first got him, it took time to slow down, but he got there.

I had a 14.2hh mare that used to do this too, as soon as she knew we were headed for home she would start to speed up then she would jog and go sideways down the road ! the jogging etc didn't tend to last too long, as soon as she knew she was definitely near home she would calm right down. Half halts and a heavy seat used to help as well as being patient and staying calm which sometimes is easier said than done !

Good luck
