What's the longest you would hack your five year olds...??

I was out for 1.5 hours other day, got a bit lost, mostly walk with a little trot . I was a bit worried it was too much for him , am I being over cautious ..?? Don't want to over do it as he a gangly 17h lad with lots of filling out to do, worried about his growing joints etc.

I am sure that would be fine for him. It's not like you are galloping flat out the whole time. I quite regularly do a 2 hour hack on mine with mostly walk and trot but a few canters too. He enjoys it and is fine, although he is different type to yours, connie x type, and I know that bigger WB type horses can take longer to mature.

We once got lost on a ride out too and were out for nearly 4 hours looking for the horse box to take us home - bit scary, but pony was fine:)

My boy is 4 years and 5 months and I took him out for 1.5hours mainly in walk with one or two trots and a canter. He loved and I'd rather see people hacking their babies than spending hour after hour solidly in the school going in circles and never teaching them about the big wide world they will have to see!

The longest I would say I have been out on my 5yr old is just over an hour & he hacks at least twice a week. I do a little bit of trotting & normaly have a canter, even pop a small log if I am in the woods :)

I normally do around the hour mark mostly in walk with the odd trot. No where really to canter though I have boxed him up and taken his to this grass gallop type place near by a few times for some canters up some hills.

But from my yard it's pretty much all road work.

The hack yesterday he was boxed to some woods, reason I'm asking as I wondered if maybe I could think about working up towards 1.5 hour hacks or leave it around the hour mark max till next year. I try to get him hacked out twice weekly at least.
