Is there anybody out there who used to do this - riding one of the horses from the trekking type centre at the base of the park on horses from Wickham stables?

No didn't go then it's about the time a gave up riding to get married, buy a house and start a family but would love to be able to get my girl there now but haven't got any transport and it's just too far away to hack. I would imagine you have some lovely memories.

What a voice from the past - I used to work full time there in 1979 as the girl who did the trekking! And then was the 'Saturday girl' and did some evenings through much of the 80s. The horses came up from Wickham, and were stabled just below the A3. Sadly there are no more horses kept there. But I have many happy memories of the horses and the rides there. My old pony Piper, who worked in the string in 1979, is buried in the field next to the cottage there. Can I remember some ponies - I wonder if any were still working there in your day. Freckles, Dolly, Tammy, Monty, Brandy, Megan, Shamiya, Claver, George. The last 2 died in the 80s I think. There were several more, but their names elude me. I didn't ride there as far as I remember in the 90s, though. I stopped just after the Great Storm of 1987, which changed the face of the forest and the nature of the rides. But some of the happiest times of my life were spent riding in the forest and out to Chalton and on the day rides to Hook's Way.

Oh wow!! I am so pleased someone has remembered! And guess what! Freckles became mine for the last three years of her life - she was great!! Can I pm you with just a couple questions about the old rides?

No, but we regularly rode past the stable when it was active. Still do ride the QE park now and again.

Thanks, Clava and Toffee44 - am trying to recall the different routes that the rides took. For instance, did any of the longer ones go up the lane from Chalton past the windmill?
Staffylover - have replied, thanks loads.

Staffylover - I have emailed you, just in case you look at this. Still happy for any other replies - particularly if you were working at this trekking centre in the early/mid-nineties?
