My daughters pony can be quite nervy when we go out hacking (we've not had him long, he's only had 1 previous home and he doesn't know the area at all). I've been asked by another mum to go on a hack with her daughter on another quite green pony who very rarely hacks out (I've been told by someone else that he can be quite naughty out). Do you think I should say no? Hate the idea of offending her or upsetting my daughter as the girls are good friends, but petrified that it could become an utter nightmare (so much so that it has me awake at 3 in the morning:rolleyes:).

Definately say NO!.
Your instincts are quite correct this would be a recipe for a disaster taking two nervous ponies/horses out together.
You need to find a rock solid pony/horse for your pony to hack out with preferably on a daily basis so that your pony gets the best chance of becoming confident when hacking out.

Just to clarify, you and your daughter both hack out together on horseback, and yours daughter's friend's mum has asked if her daughter can join you and your daughter?

you're obviously not comfortable with this and you'll be very nervous, which the horses will inevitably get wind of and may panic. if your daughter's friend were to have an accident (god forbid) you would inevitably be held responsible -- i have seen this happen to even the best of friends. in bad situations, everyone wants someone to blame.

i suggest that you tell this other mum, if she does not ride, to take a bicycle and ride ahead of her own daughter on her hacks. you can make the excuse that you've not had your daughter's pony long and would like to have more time to get to know his character before adding more distractions into the mix.

perhaps in time you will be confident enough to trot out as a trio, until then i suggest playing it safe.

I think that you are right to be concerned, sounds like your pony needs a calm companion to hack with to give him a good example to follow, not a pony that may spoil him.

why aren't we asleep at this time?? lol.

Certainly no, just say to the other mother that this really wouldn't be a good idea yet - fantastic idea for the future but not until they are both hacking out well.

Thank you all - needed to hear from others that I'm not being overly cautious. I will go and see the mother later and explain :). Hopefully a better nights sleep tonight!!

I recently had a huge row with somebody over this. She wanted to hack out with my daughter ( who is just getting her confidence back after a previous pony took off with her in a field ) and myself. Her pony is very newly broken in and takes off with the owner regularly..I said no and she had a huge tantrum....When it comes to the safety of children theres no compromise...x
