Does anyone know of any really nice hacking around Derwentside? Getting so sick of the old routes especially as the mud seems to be ruining all our plans:p I know there is apparently a network of disused railways great for riding but I have no idea how and where to find them. Anyone know how to get ahold of a map showing all the bridleways in County Durham? Thanks :D

I go over to Hamsterley forest every couple of week- can easily do 10-15 miles the and tracks are good. Or up by Edmondbyers the bridleways are marked on the OS Map number 307. ( that's the orange Explorer ones).

hi, where abouts exactly in derwentside/ county durham are you? I can ride along the old lines but without knowing where you are I dont know how to direct you to them. Is your horse good in traffic inc lorries as this will make a difference as to how far you can get.

Yeah where abouts are you? The derwent walk is 5 mins from me and is good especially if you link up with Chopwell Woods-it has a carpark where you can safely leave trailers/lorries and you can easily do a 3hr+ ride in there!

I used to live in County Durham

There is a railway track btween South Pelaw and Pelton nr Chester Le Street that is part of the sea to sea cycle route between Cumbria and Sunderland.

Next place along from Edmunbyers is Muggleswick Moor, a nice circular route.
A second vote for Chopwell woods, although you need a permit to ride there,
join CWHRA and you get a permit, they do a fantastic fun ride, passing through Gibside.

Chopwell Forest is nice, we are up between Consett and Stocksfield and there are a ton of nice hacking routes there, mainly racks and quiet roads with lovely views :) Also a couple of good pub rides too ;)

There is also the tracks round by Tanfield railway and Watergate Park Sunniside way

I'm down near Burnopfield, can go along Derwent walk and ride to Chopwell but sadly the track that leads down to it is ruined at the minute!:( He's okay in traffic :)

That's not far from me at all! Small world. Ah that's a shame about the track. Had a lovely new years day hack in the woods today, we're lucky to have a bridle path direct from our yard into the woods.
I'll have a think on what else there is near you.
