Today I rode my boy down the drive from the yard. I have hacked him loads with a friend and he is always good, sometimes needs a lead past a scary object but that’s me as much as him. Not nasty when he is not sure just a bit wobbly! And I know if I put leg on and rode he would be fine.
So today I thought “sod it” and got daughter to walk with me down drive she was on foot and he was fine we did not go out on to road as we where not kited out in hi vis. But feel like he would have just kept on going.
So my question is do I now just go for it and if a problem rears its head deal with it, or take it in small steps. Daughter is off school now finished exams so have a helper and feel happier with her walking so feel I should extend the distance over a period of weeks, get her to walk behind more etc
Advice please

My boy was very nappy when out hacking on his own and would not go in front even in company.

He will go out now with someone on foot, often walking behind him and I'm sure he wouldn't miss them if they wern't there.

He is now so good he wants to go in front on hacks :-)

I'm also alot more confident with him and that's given us both alot more confidence!!

I've also found sticking to the same route helps so he's confident with where he's going xx

My first solo hack was out one gate onto the road for 50 yards and in another gate. Cr@pped myself the whole way! Horse was fine but she definitely felt my nerves as she jogged the 50 yards. Next time I had some rescue remedy and that was much better.

Get daughter a bicycle - you can then both go a bit further each time.

Then after a few times you could part company & she could go on ahead & wait for you.

Later, when you are really happy, then you could leave daughter at the end of the drive & tell her you will be 20+ mins, if not back then please come and find you :)

When I first hacked my newly backed horse out on her own, I went on a hack she had done 100 times before in company and got someone on horseback to follow me round but 10 mins behind me just in case I had an issue they would soon catch up and could offer a lead or just some company but obviously if there was no issue we completed on our own. :-)
