do you and your horse hack out alone? My cob is great in company happy to go first or last has breaks etc. I have had him about 5 weeks and in the first couple of weeks was great hacking out alone, now he is ok, but just wants to do everything in fast gear, isn't interested in just having a nice leisurely hack, but wants to race around and back to the yard. Anyone have any idea what i can do to slow him down, i don't want to give up and just ride in company as i do enjoy hacking just me and murphy!!

Thanks!

I hack alone a lot, but my mare got worse out alone the longer I owned her! Started napping when we got to the first corner out the yard. I thought it was a bit odd, but I soon learnt it was her testing me and seeing what she could get away with as she was getting a bond and braver with me and her surroundings. so, I just went out alone all the more! We still sometimes have to have words, but I just never give up...even if I have to get off and walk her in hand then get on again. I'd say persever and he should come around to the idea. One thing I did to stop her rushing,...is randomly go a different way to normal. So if you have a usual loop, go the opposite way around it, or extend it, or even just up another track and back again. This worked with my mare when I felt her rushing as she then had to really think about where she was going rather than rushing and knowing how to get home.
Good luck :)
