Hacking out in the wind

Usually don't worry about the wind, unless it's really strong, then I worry about falling branches and such like. As the horses are on the top of the North Downs we are used to wind so I mean it has to be REALLY windy to bother us.

The only wind-related behaviour I noted this weekend was when we rode by a paddock with a couple of fine dressage horses in it. We were downwind, and my little stallion put his head high in the air and filled his nostrils. He was obviously loving to get wind of them, but never hesitated or put one foot out of place.

Our biggest problem in high winds is that our nearest bridleway emerges onto a busy road, with zero visibility. When you can't hear for the wind it's beyond dangerous...so much so that we don't use it on windy days, as it's safer to ride on the road.

My boy doesnt like the wind. Hes normally cool as cucumber but on a windy day he is rather nervous and on his toes.
Where we live there are miles of mountains and open fields to hack out on but if the wind is bad I just stick to the lower paths and lanes that are more sheltered and enclosed.
