Help! My horse always gets ridiculously silly when he sees other horses when hacking out. He's fine if they're going in the opposite direction, only if they're ahead. I'm guessing it's a herd instinct but really don't know how to calm him down when this happens.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and solved it. Thanks!

All I can suggest is that you do circles etc then walk him on, if he pulls & messes about then more circles (on both reins) so that he might learn that his actions will NOT get hom closer to the horses but have the reverse effect.

My mare does this. Only if we are out alone too. I find keeping her "busy" with transitions, lateral work across track and general ignoring the prancing as much as possible is all I can do. She prob will always do it since I've had her twelve years and not stopped it yet! Is prob my fault for finding friends out hacking quite often and trotting up for a natter! She thinks all other horses are her new BFFs. Lol

Luckily my mare is fine at parties and generally good in company so I don't care too much but I prob should have schooled more out hacking when she was started.

You could try that

Thanks for the replies. I do try the above tactics but we usually see the other horses when on a main road and, where he is fantastic with all traffic normally, when he sees other horses all sense goes straight out of his head...bless!! I've got this reoccurring movie in my head of us getting hit by a car while he's mucking around.
