Hi all,

If you could spare a moment and vote on the poll it would be much appreciated!

On a related note if anyone has ever been involved in an accident involving horse and car/lorry/motorcycle could you drop me a message or post on the thread what happened? I am currently writing an article for my portfolio regarding bridleways and why we need more of them.

Merry Christmas!

P.S. is it just me who would really rather a non - white christmas this year, bah humbug!

I wouldn't mind hacking on roads so much if they were quieter than they are and all drivers were considerate and expected a horse around the next bend - in an ideal world that would possible be the case, but I much prefer open land to hack out on anyway so have voted for that.

much agreed, angle of the article will be that we either need a greater amount of off road hacking for safetys sake or a greater level of attention placed on instructing drivers in how to drive in the countryside!

i can ride about 4 miles off road straight from my field - and about 20miles in a circuit with only about 3 mlies on road - so I am very lucky. My average hack is about 6-8 miles with about 0.75 mile on road - the joys of living on the edge of the highlands!

hacking is very important to me - esp as i don't have a school and my mare and i get v bored going round in circles (i do all schooling on hacks to keep us both interested)

when i hack - where ever i go - on tracks or roads - i alwyas wear high viz and have some onher - in case i get separated from her if she has a total madam moment - so far i'v managed to hold onto the reins but one day she may escape and i'd rather people see her coming.

some of the tractor & lorry drivers round here used to be bad until they got front paws waved at them and a v  rosie hailing abuse :o now they are quite good ;)

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah really confused some how have voted and replied to a bikini thread!!

However I have put both on and off road as I think in todays world its essential for a horse to be calm and sensible in traffic, we meet cars/lorrys/trucks at shows, farms, on the liveries I do road work but most often its only through the village onto a bridle way etc but I still feel my horse needs to have manners in traffic.

mine used to be perfect - she's fine with trains on the perth to inverness line which we ride right next to - but a year and a half ago a berry pickers double decker bus drove past us on a narrow road without slowing down at all  she was petrified and has been bad ever since if anything big tries to pass her at anything other than a crawl :(

Ha ha! I ended up on the bikini thread too! How bizarre :D

I would love to hack on bridlepaths and fields only, although my girl is great with traffic - you just never know what idiots are lurking round the corner.

Both for me as on-road is so good for the feet (barefoot pony).

I would love more off-road around me, I'm almost 100% on the roads sadly. There are some great bridleways further away but you have to ride along a really dangerous A road to get to them. It could be worse though as all the local roads are incredibly quiet and the few drivers well-behaved on the whole (probably helps that we know most of them). We exercise the dogs alongside, to give an indication of how quiet the roads are - we also find a few loose dogs alongside stops the odd lost driver / tourist from attempting to squeeze past.
