Hacking to shows

girl on my yard hacks to our local show, i have actually offered to take him with mine but she likes to get there and him be warmed up, and slightly less energetic😂

i think im going to hack down next season even though ive got the box, i think im just going for dressage so my mum can ride one whilst i ride the other, then they’re both warmed up and set to go! less faff i think, for the sake of 1 dressage test each it’s not worth putting boots tail guards etc on!

The warm up is a definite plus!

Does anyone ever hack to shows these days? I know there seems to be a lot less local shows than there were, we used to hack to a gymkhana almost every week back in the 60s/70s.
If there was a show about 3 or 4 miles from you, would you hack there, or put your horse in a box or trailer and drive??
I hack - I am lucky to have an equestrian centre near enough. I have no transport of my own but a young pony do I can get her out.Prefer arriving warmed up as well. Lucky the hacking over is really good.

Before I had transport I would hack to local competitions, the hunt and local farm rides. I probably haven't done it for 7 or 8 years now because I have transport and solved our loading problems. If it took 30 minutes to load each way it was more stress to box up than to hack over. About 4 miles was my limit but this was more down to what i could safely access than distance - i limited myself to 1/4 mile up any main A roads as we could hammer that in trot.
I used to love doing the farm ride at Somerford; 3 1/2 miles warm up, hit the grass and fly, stop for a brew and cool down then a gentle 3 1/2 miles home. I'd be gone for the whole morning but he was never stiff or sore from doing it and was fit as a fiddle with no spare weight on him.

Ive hacked to a few places in recent years. Sometimes its because my horse can be a bit sticky loading and its easier than wondering if he will come back and sometimes if more of us are going than there is spaces in the trailer. We have a BIG equestrian centre and a few local summer shows inside hacking distance. Its not nice hacking to some of them, but the horses are fine!
