Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago I posted about hacking. Essentially I have not been out hacking for some months due to my broken back in 2005 and associated loss of confidence. I was going to go out on the lead with my instructor. Unfortunately due to her shcedule and my schedule we never managed to do this.

Today I decided to bite the bullet and go out myself. There was hardly any wind, a nice warm day. After crossing the rather busy main road outside the yard I decided to ride around a few massive fields. I thought if I did really well I might be able to go through the woods and down a very long bridletrack until it met the road. This I did, and I rode around the fields to get back home. A good 1/2 hr hack.

So I did it! Mickey was a star. He only got a bit joggy/spooky on the way home because I used to sometimes canter him up the bridletrack. He also does feel when I am tense (however small that tension may be to me).

I tried to focus on all the many, many successful hacks I have taken him on, even when he was a 4 yr old. Tried to push bad thoughts out of my mind. Did a lot of talking and a bit of singing to him!! And some leg yields and work that I have been doing in the school to take our minds off spooky things/dangers.

So there we are. I enjoyed some bits of it very much. Will take a while before I am totally relaxed though....

Well done, hacking is the bain of my life, but I try to do it as much as possible, like you have I find focusing on the positive experiences really helps, very very well done

I have always loved hacking TBH. I used to take Mickey for miles and miles on my own (even when he was a 4 yr old). He loves to get out and about too.
When I was a kid I used to lead polo ponies out. I had no concerns.
I hope this is the start of me getting back where I want to be. I love the freedom of being out in the countryside with an elevated view of everything!

Well done, fantastic takes a lot of guts to do what you have done.

I hope you get all your confidence back soon

Brilliant! This is the very best season to encourage you to get out there and it really helps to focus on the positive.....hope you both have a lovely time on your next hack

You give me hope that I WILL get back on Clyde once his leg is fully healed. I came a cropper in December and. at 56, don't know if I have the nerve to get back on in June.

Never say Never - Like my motto in my signature 'Never, Never, Never give up'. That pretty much sums me and my life up.
You've got to come up with a strategy that will help you. And then take small steps. A little at a time. If you want to ride again you will. It's mostly psychological. Good luck.

thanks for the pm - i am soooo pleased for you - i bet you are on a real high - dont push yourself too hard now - just stay in your comfort zone for a while - keep me posted - best wishes - s x x x x

Well done to you. I hacked today for the first time since breaking my ankle B4 Christmas, so understand a little of how you must have felt. Onwards and upwards, you should be proud of yourself. xx

If anyone had seen me they'd have thought I was a right nutter..... singing 'Hey Mickey you're so pretty' and songs from the King & I (I did a quadrille to this yrs ago).
