Hacking with your dog?

I've never taken my Westie out, she doesn't have much horse-sense; however I'm hoping to get the collie trained enough to come out with me.

I have done a few times with my dog on a quiet lane hack, dog enjoyed it and it certainly made the pony braver , always asked the dog to go in front so pony could see her, dog is super in any traffic, as soon as she hears a car will sit on the verge and wait , sadly I got slated big time on here for doing and was told I was irresponsible so haven't done it since

well if you were safe and all of you enjoyed it, then do it again. I think its all about being in control and applying a little common sense. If dog and horse are good together then no issue. I'd crack on personally.

Yes the dogs at work used to come too. They followed tho rather than the horses following them. They are getting older now tho and no longer want to
Come! Mostly off road hacking although they were very good at tucking in behind. They were trained to know when they were allowed to go off for a wander and when they had to stick close. I knew someone who had a jack Russel that went xc schooling with them. If horse wasn't sure of a jump she would send the dog over first and the horse would follow.

Lol at the lack of replies to this comment :p

Haha. I will answer. I don't. He goes off the forest trails into the undergrowth and poops. I don't know what I would do in the UK since it is much more populated. But nobody walks where I ride in this remote area of Spain. There is more fox and badger and wild boar poop along the trails than my dog poop. I do ofcourse pick his poop up in towns and public footpaths or beaches etc.

My friend hacks with her dog, so when I ride with her he often comes along! the dog and horse were never acquainted before hand and they get on fine!! my horse prefers it if the dogs in front, because he hates anything coming up behind him!

A lot of people do from our yard as you can go straight onto the downs, so as long as the dogs have good recall and don't chase sheep/ cows it's fine. I can understand the appeal - it must be lovely! However, I did encounter a woman hacking with two dogs AND a cat when I was driving back from the farm the other day and personally think she was a bit of an idiot. It's a single track country lane and not a busy road by any means, but does get a reasonable amount of traffic and she had NO control of the dogs from horseback at all. The cat was fine, it jumped into the hedge as soon as it heard my car, but the dogs just lolled about the road looking confused as she tried to make them stand off to the side with her and the horse. I sat there for five minutes waiting for her to sort herself out, she then said to me, "oh just keep driving, they'll get out of the way"?! At this point, one of the dogs was so close to the front of my car I couldn't even SEE it! I politely declined to do as she asked and she did then get off and drag both dogs to the side of the road. But really, what an idiot!

When I first started to "hack" Dave round the fields, my instructor's dogs came too. He saw them as safe & followed quite happily. Only one "moment" when one bounced out of a hedge!

I ride out with mine, have direct forest access, no roadwork! Horse loves the company. As to dog poo, by choice he'll scurry off into the undergrowth, never known him poo on short grass or track when off the lead if he has any choice.
