i have a extermely strong neddy , am i aint a little girl i have got muscle and i do have difficulty with her. She is a madam for leaning on the bit and doing huge leaps toward jumps, i ride her in a snaffle and at competions in a waterford. i think i am going to try her in a english hackmoor < cant spell . what do you think...?

I wouldnt advise it until you've tried most of the usual other options! Personally Id only consider using a bitless on a horse who was funny in its mouth.

If you're only using a snaffle at home then obviously there are stronger bits than that. Is she strong at home as well as at competitions? If the waterford doesnt work then there's plenty of other types to try. One of mine used to lean on the bit, he goes beautifully in a kimblewick.

Try it but I don't think it'll help you - it may in fact frighten you. I have a very soft mouthed youngster and hack and jump him in a hackamore and he's not strong at all but I still have difficulty with steering and brakes. He's very green though and doesn't understand leg aids at the moment - maybe your horse is far more established and would understand better. However, I've found the English hackmore a very mild option. The German hackamore has a longer shank and you can use that with a curb chain, which may be more useful for you.

I'm not sure the English Hackamore will help you.

I use one for hacking as my horse is fussy in the mouth but I can't jump him in it very well as it's quite mild and I don't have a great deal of steering.

Have you tried the Myler combination?

I would give it a go. I am riding very often with a hackamore, for hacking, small jumps, everything etc. I and my horse love it and definitifely prefere biteless. She is better to control. There are some horses which do respond better to nose pressure that to a bite and pulling in the mouth.
I would recomend the hackamore with the short shenks and the leather noseband, not the metal one, so you cannot damage anything.

I used one on Jack a couple of years ago, after I split his mouth using a waterford! He pissed off in the waterford and I couldn't stop him - hence a split mouth (yes did feel terrible) Anyway, he was fine in hackamore, jumped and everything in it. But I now hack and jump him in a gag with roundings on, and it's great, one small check and he comes back to me! Or I have alot of friends that use a pelham? Good luck, it's all trial and error!
