Hackney stallion on Countryfile

OK this is probably a thickie post, but I know nothing about breeding etc,.
On Countryfile stallion was mounting a dummy horse so they could collect semen.
How is the stallion conned into thinking this is a real mare ?

They train the stallions to scent normally. Its not a case of making them think its a real mare.
Some studs when training have a mare in season stood in front of the dummy to make it more appealing.

I've been to that stud. They can train them to mount anything. They have a big mare there that is used to entice the stallions. I can't remember whether she was sewn or had her ovaries removed

A little mare urine rubbed into the neck of the dummy is often used too.

Doesn't take much to interest them - boys will be boys !!

A lot of stallions don't have to be trained, they'll mount anything that looks remotely hopeful.
