Hackneys anyone?

Has anyone on here got a hackney ??

What do you do with them?

Just being nosey as Samba is actually lot more hackney than welsh I think. When I ride her all I see is ears in my face lol. Shes very honest and is always listening and doesnt seem to explode like some welsh do.

I think its the opposite, I think them and the other gaited or flashy moving breeds have a very smooth ride. I think they were bred as a ridden horse, and like the tenesse walker, prized for thier speed and comfort.


could be wrong - just remembering from books i had as a kid lol.

Yes I think it is part of thier breeding for sure. Not just something you can train any horse to do.

I would say its a bit of both, breeding and training. But the breeding def has a major part to play!

It's great to see a post about the often overlooked (and now quite rare) Hackney .

They were originally bred as a driving horse ( think sporty car for the well off) and the ones around nowadays are usually shown yoked up. However, they are extremely comfortable to ride (I often used to ride Hackneys bareback and it was like they were on springs). From the ones I have known, they tend to be very intelligent and inquisitive, easily bored, have a great sense of their own importance :) and are 'quirky' and full of joir de vivre (sp?). Maybe too full of themselves for some but I have never known a bad natured Hackney. In my opinion the breed deserves wider recognition and not just to be used in harness. I jumped at grade C with mine and to be honest felt they all showed an aptitude for jumping.

If you google the Hackney Horse Society you'll get more info and on Utube there is a good intro to the breed (albeit the American version), although in the USA Hackney ponies in particular are a far cry from those bred here in the past.

An old guy who was very well respected in the UK and indeed was one of the first to export Hackneys to the US summed them us as Loyal, Long Lived and Lively...I guess that's just about right.

I would virtually kill to own a Hackney again, they just seem to have that 'spark'.
 
Alainex- is that first one for sale anywhere in this country? The sabino? If so I must have him!
I've had quite a few hackneys, both pure and crosses, and love them. I haven't got one at the moment sadly but am always on the lookout for another. I think the cross breds make excellent jumpers and all of mine have jumped BSJA. If I put my current KWPN mare in foal it will be to a hackney for sure! The paces are big to sit too but normally more so in a part bred, the canter of a pure bred horse is mean to be rolling and comfortable and quite collected.
 
My boy is hackney x and I couldnt agree more with what Hackneyclass2 wrote:

He was difficult to stay on at first, very sharp and sooo fast lol but we are getting there now!! He is very active, except maybe on some really lazy hot days!

Was gonna try and put a pic in but dont know how! :confused:

Ive been pondering for a while which breed id get next. Hearing that these beatiful creatures can also jump has caught my attention!!
