Hi
I am hacking a friend's horse while mine is out of action but have no one to ride with in a new area. Is anyone here from around Rushden, Cumberloe, Clothall area or can recommend some rides. Said friend is on holiday this week and dont want to bother her and her mum wasnt very informative.

Sorry no horse but if you get a map and you can definitely head from Rushden towards Cottered/Broadfield hall and do a loop around or head up towards Sandon. Loads of lovely rides around that way. But I would recommend heading towards Broadfield Hall(you can do a big circle along that way) ignore the bits that tell you its a Road used as a public footpath along broadfield hall it is not. One of the farmers at the Throcking end tries to believe it is. Lots of people ride along it. It is pretty much sign posted with the Bridleway signs etc. Ground is good up that way.

I lived in Rushdan until recently! Where is the horse stabled? I must know it, it's a tiny village.

broadfield is nice, as is Shaw Green lane. Also you can go up through Friars Wood to Sandon and come back on the road. I always tried to avoid too much riding along the road past the Moon and Stars after I got hit by a car, at rush hour at least (Although I got hit on a Sunday Lunchtime).

The bridleways are a bit odd in the Braodfield area. It's the border between East and North Herts. In E Herts they are bridleways and change into footpaths as they cross the border in N Herts, often in the middle of nowhere between fields. We just used to carry on though.

www.streetmap.co.uk will show the bridleways

I agree re the bridleways going into footpaths then back to bridleways?? (funny the new sign posts got run over within days of being put up by a tractor) but still plenty of hoof marks. I have known children be told they cannot go to Rushden on the footpaths by the farmers and to turn back! Just keep away from the A507 in Cottered and you will be fine. Explore and enjoy.

Opps just noticed all my typos last night!

In 1951(?) the parish councils were asked to state what catergory the rights of way over their land were. Funny that the main landowner at the time was also Chair of the PC so said they were just footpaths. It's quite common, if you look at Sandon TFW doesn't have any bridleways on his land.

There are some very old cast iron signposts in Cottered stating Rushden, bridleway so originally the bridleway must have gone to Rushden (Treacle Lane). It would have said Southern Green otherwise.

When I first moved to Rushden there was some great hacking towards Broadfield, however the farmer has dumped tons of rubble on the tracks so he could get lorries down them and they are now nearly impassable.

I find the A507 isn't too bad through Cottered these days, no Sainsburys lorries now and a 30mph speed limit. I just used to cross over at the end of the bridleway, go round the green and cross back again at the Bull and go back down that bridleway.

I've moved just across the A10 now, into E Herts and the hacking is fab, miles and miles of tracks with hardly any roadwork.
