Yesterday I went to go get my mare from her field at around 6pm, when I caught her she was being her normal self. At 6.30pm I'd finish catching the other ponies and doing yard chores and went to say bye to my mare. She didn't look very happy and a bit gloomy, which is odd and she's usually a really hyper excited mare when she sees anyone. I went inside her stable and noticed she had not eaten her feed, hay or drank any water! This was odd as she usually LOVES food! I spoke to the yard owner and she stated she'd keep an eye on her and that I should go home. But as I thought at 9pm I got a message saying I should come down as she had still not touched her hay, feed, water and not pooed?! I had to walk her around the school from 9.15pm to 11pm before the vet came. When he did he confirmed colic (as we'd suspected). She had some painkillers and had to be sedated to be examined. I had hardly any sleep as I arrived home at 12pm then went back up the yard to check up on her at 2am, 6am and 10am and spent the rest of the day keeping an eye on her! This is the first time she's ever had colic and I'd never like to experience it again as she looked aweful and in pain! So glad we caught it early though and she didn't get worse! So tired now though :( but it was worth it !

Aww bless you, it's exhausting isn't it? And then you don't sleep properly anyway!

Very pleased to hear she is ok now :)

Yes she looks a lot better today! To anyone else they probably wouldn't have noticed as she didn't look the slightest bit colicy just a bit sad. Good job I asked the yard owner to keep an eye on her, otherwise it could of got bad!

Well done for picking up on it so quickly. That's half the battle. My mare had colic last spring and we also noticed her being a bit 'sad' looking and depressed and called the vet at once. One injection and a £120 later she was fine, but we still checked on her all night.

She was just very out of character and she's very cheeky, she's not ill that often so I could tell straight away. We had to get the vet out and she responded well to it:) But not sure how much the bill is yet haha, but would rather pay then let her suffer!

I had exactly this last weekend. I had been at a show all day with other liveries for moral support and photographer when we got back to the yard I went to get my girl in and she was a bit chilled, too chilled. I brushed her and put her in her stable where she usually goes straight to her hay, this time she looked at it and went to the back if her stable. I took her out to the round pen to move her about and she was very lethargic, she did trot but it took some encouragement and she usually bombs about for 5 mins in there. Took her back to the yard and thought she was definitely colicking so walked about and rang the vet.
She was taken to horsepital as she had a temperature as well as colic signs. It was quite scary.
She spent Saturday night, Sunday and Sunday night at horsepital came home Monday evening. She has started to feel better by Sunday day anyway as she was being her usual bolshy self and not liking the vet putting needles in her neck! My bill was just under £800 that included the out of hours weekend callout, exam and all the medication she had at the yard and at horsepital. I thought it was pretty reasonable to be fair.
