Ok so out in the xc field tonight in my lesson we went to jump a ditch, horse overjumped and unseated me, I slid down her neck and then she put her head down and I went head first onto the floor. Ouch. Head hit the ground first.

I'm adament that I will replace my hat, as the peak is totally snapped (yes I know you shouldn't do XC with a peaked hat). I told my non horsey parents this who arn't too happy- the hat is the Champion Ventair and cost about £90. I tried to explain although the hat may not show up as broken the material might have been weakened and not protect my head if I have another fall.

My dad's a radiographer and has suggested he takes my hat into work and xrays it to see if any breaks show up. I told him that it wouldnt show any stress on the material, but he said that the stress would be a crack or something like that...

Anyway basically can you all reassure me that this hat does need replacing- they don't seem to believe me and I REALLY don't want to wear the hat again!!!

p.s. am fine after the fall, hurt nothing, confidence is ok, got back on after giggling with instructor for a few minutes and jumped the ditch 3 more times!

In which case he should know that an xray would show nothing on the delamanation of a composite...

I hope your Dad never has to xray me with that knowledge of xrays!

Haha!

Just gotta persuade them that I do actually need a new hat... it's easier said than done unfortunatly.

Dad's a great radiographer (he's a manager), he just doesn't understand what I'm trying to say and we're going round in circles!

A radiographer (and we employ a lot at work) would know that xrays will go straight through a riding helmet and show nothing good or bad as the difference in density (and hence discrimination of the instrument) between good and bad is small. Maybe he's been managing too long...

After a bang on the helmet falling off you really need to replace the hat.

I'm a father & it is exepnsive to replace the hat,,,,,,,tell me something that isn't on the horsey world

But what price does your father put on your head?

I replaced my hat recently as Hubby dropped it onto a concrete path by accident. However im terrible when it comes to hats.

I would tell your dad that a hat is a small price to pay for your possible injury if the hat was weakened

Presuming your dad is NHS xraying your hat would be a misuse of NHS funds.

What price your brain? You will need a new hat as the streese placed on the hat when the peak broke will have weakened the hat.

Next time get a skull, not a hat, skulls are a bit cheaper and get some funky hat silks.

Thanks everyone, yeh I'm getting a new hat- going to get the Ventair Skull instead of the peaked ventair as I still need the ventilation...

Parents arn't even paying for it- I've gotta fork out so not sure why they were very concerned!

If anyone knows anywhere I can get a Ventair Skull in Cornwall please pm me, or I'll have to buy off of the internet

I am on a BSI (British Standards Institute) committee which deals with the testing of equestrian back protectors and with the best of respects for your father you must get yourself a new crah hat. Once your hat has had an impact and absorbed and transmitted the destructive energy they have served their purpose and will no longer be protective.

A new hat will protect you from a future mishap and hopefully prevent you from suffering a serious injury which could cause you a permanent disability or even worse.
