WARNING - Its a type Kenzo Ramble

Brought Miraed into the stable yesterday evening (to try a jumping saddle :D) anyway all was fine and dandy, she's tucking into her haynet while I'm busy grooming her, then she wanders off to the back of the stable with a strange look on her face, squares up and I'm stood there thinking oh she's going to have a wee, few minutes later she does.

But she didnt come back to carry on munching/groomed, she just stood there which I thought was strange, then she started pacing around her stable, getting restless, bit of tail swishing, pawing the ground, totally out of character, so there's me starting to panic thinking OH MY GOD she's colicing!

Then she gets down, then back up again, by this time I'm in even more of a panic then she started retching and sucking in air and trying to swollow.

Silly mare had got choke

By which time I'd gathered a fellow livery, the YO, the YO's wife (complete with baby in arms) within the space of minute!!!

I'm flapping around like a headless chicken (along with the rest of real chickens that wonder around) thinking the worst and that she's going to die on me and me having to ring her owner up an explain....yada yada.

YO and fellow livery telling me to calm down it will clear just give her 5 to 10 minutes, I'm still panicing because she was not showing the same signs as my other horse (going back 12 years ago) that once got choke, so everthing but choke was going through my head!

Then frantically shaking I rang my vet, for him to come out asap but the receptionist said he was not on duty that evening for emergancy calls but this other one was (so I had visions of some young vet straight out of vetinary school that would not know a horse if it kicked in ....well know) so there's me thinking NO HE WILL NOT DOOOOOO!

(I'm covering the phone and starting another confo with everyone else moanng as it's not so and so on duty) but insists he comes out ASAP!

Still busy massaging her throat and trying to locate where the blockage was.

Meanwhile the OH just happens to ring me to see what time I'll be home from riding and I answer the phone saying ''Miraed is choking to death!'' while everyone else bursts out laughing  ....they know I'm a panic merchant

YO's shouting in the background (while busy massaging her neck and poor Miraed is wondering what the hell is going on) ''she's trying to kill her off so you'll buy her a new horse!''...again everyone in fits of laughter by which point I nearly strangled the YO for saying such a thing!

Anyway she did a tiny cough and a splutter (and I mean tiny ), sprayed us with coating of green slime, took a little gulp, then proceeded to tuck back into her hay net like nothing had happend. and she was as right as rain and not the wiser. :D

Then obviously cancelled the vet coming out, all within a space of 10 minutes.

Now I'm going to panic evertime she takes a mouthful of hay, just in case it happens again...she's that bloody gready she's doesnt stop for a moments breath when she's chomping on hay, horses eh!

This is pretty much what happened when my mare got choke, though I unfortunately couldn't help it and started crying (oh dear!) also.

My vets however told me to give it time. Said it looked dreadful but normally by the time the vet got there, it would of cleared up. She got a bit of apple caught and I think we just waited until it kind of dissolved!! (of course i too was rubbing her throat and everything else)

But yes, at first I wasn't sure what was going on, it's quite scary to witness.

Glad your Mare is OK and also sounds like you have a lovely bunch at your yard (always a good thing)

Well my other horse once had choke (TB as well) going back god it must be well over 12 years ago, but he showed different signs but he was actually more far gone, (froffing/heavy drooling/coughing...in distress), but she was not doing any of that, just these strange gulping and bracing of the neck....which was equally as strange to see though.

We had the vet out to my other asap because it was past clearing itself and that fact that we'd only just arrived and caught him doing it, vet came straight away and wanted to tube him, so he had to twitch him (with one of those really old fashioned wooded twitches he brought) which the horse did not like obvioulsy when he started to put this thin tube up, horse reared up, twitch when flying off and hit the vet straight across the head (went with a right old bang as well) vet screamed blue murder, but when the horse came back down it landed on his foot...again vet cried out in amence pain! along with some terrible language :o

The poor vet was hopping around on one foot in total agony holding his head and thinking he's broken his foot as well.

Anyway after all that, because he the horse had jumped about a bit, it actually cleared it, so vet never needed to do anything in the end. :D

I had to walk the horse away very quickly, I think the vet was about to murder the horse once he manged to put his foot on the floor :D

It is very scary isn't it :(

Bella has had it twice now. Both times when I didn't do her feed wet enough which made me feel even worse as I caused it :( Daughter was there the second time and when I suddenly moved she looked at me like I was mad ( ok madder :p ) as she hadn't spotted that the sod was choking.

Both times it has cleared quickly and I've been left feeling wrung out and limp :p

((hugs ))

Although I think she's planned it ;) she must of spotted me walking across the yard with a new saddle for when we start jumping and tried to do herself in :D

On a serious note, thanks guys, yes it was scary.

{{{{hugs}}}} to you it is very frightening if you don't get it moved quickly. My mare has had choke twice now the last time a few weeks ago when I gave her some carrots. Couldn't locate it and despite hard massage, her eyes rolled back and she dropped her weight against me  A few seconds later orange gunk sprayed up the barn wall :D Utter relief!

Hope she's o.k and not too sore :)
