Had a scare today!!!

Having been through navicular type problems last year and a kissing spine operation four weeks ago you can imagine how I felt this morning when a call from the yard manager informed me that my gelding had a snotty nose. Usually not a problem but as we have strangles in the area.... Thankfully his temperature was normal and no glands swollen confirmed by the vet. Typical of him!! Began lunging him yesterday and he throws a wobbler today!! Don't you just love horses?!

yes horses do give you scares all the time,
dont mean to be rude but my horse had the op 3weeks ago aswell you probably remember me replying to your posts before. but i was told that you arent surpose to start lunging untill after 6weeks, as the first 6weeks is just active walking.
may be that is why he is throwing a wobbler as he isnt ready for that he may still be sore, hope you dont mind me saying. my boy is just going into his 4th week of walking and doing 35 to 40 minutes walk aday and he has had enough then in the afternoon i just take him for a walk in hand to graze

Hi Ozwold, yes I was concerned about how early I was asked to work him so I checked with the vet who carried out the operation and got my own vet to come out and check him over. Apparently, the 'three cut method' rather than one big cut means they can be worked earlier. I walked him out for the first four weeks and on Sunday he was turned out into a small paddock. My vet had no problems with his wounds so said carry on. By eight weeks the vet is hoping to put a saddle on his back - no rider of course - and be lunging for 30 mins a day. I am very careful. We lunge for 5 mins, in walk, on each rein, and then its back in to the stable. I'm in no rush to get him working and believe me when I say I'm taking it very slowly.

really pleased he is doing well, and i bet its great to turn out into a small padock cant wait to be-abl to turn my boy out, sorry if i spoke out of term, just thought they were all treated the same, thats telling me sticking my nose in and assuming they are all the same, lol.
my lad has had to go back on antibiotics as his scaring on his back has swollen so just to be carefull of any infection, even though the scares are really nice and clean and closed.

Hello again Ozwold. Please don't feel you spoke out of turn. I was amazed myself at my vets rehab plan of having him lunging for 30 mins 6 wks after his operation, and have sort reassurance from BethH about it on a couple of occaisions!! lol
Sorry to hear your boy had to go back on antibiotics will keep an eye out for any swelling on my boy. Let me know how you get on over the next few weeks.
