Had an accident in my horsebox

After months of saving up for a lorry, I finally bought one on Saturday. So I took my horse out in it for the first time today just for a hack. On the way home I had just turned a bend in the road, when the lorry spun round and crashed into a fence. I had no idea what had happened. I couldn't get out the drivers door, so had to climb out the window. When I looked I saw that the side ramp had come down. The lady driving behind me said it had come down and hit a tree causing the lorry to spin round. Rosie was looking out the ramp obviously wondering what the hell was going on. She was very calm though. I managed to get in the side door, where I saw that the partition had collapsed and was leaning on her. Some people that had stopped helped me move the partition and luckily she had no injuries-then she started eating her hay and I fed her carrots! She was so calm, she is anyway, but in this sort of situation I couldn't believe it. The police came and so did friends from the yard and one of the girls brought her trailer down so I could get Rosie home. Rosie came out of the lorry fine, the police closed the road and she loaded straight into the trailer (I'm so proud of her) I was such a mess. She's back in the field now, she trotted off to see her friends and seemed fine. I'm in total shock, I can't believe what happened. I didn't use the side ramp and can only think that the previous owners didn't lock it, as it needs to be done with an allen key. The box was recovered and it seems like its going to be a right off. Behind the fence the lorry went into is a big bank down to the rail track. The rail track guy said we were so lucky we went into the concrete post otherwise we would have gone down the bank and onto the railway line (oh my god) and things would have been a whole lot worse. I'm just glad that Rosie is ok. I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to her.

Glad everyone is alright

Oh that is terrible but at least both you and Rosie are ok, that’s the most important thing!!!! Horseboxes are easily replaced.

Big hugs!
Jo.

You poor thing,I am just glad you are all ok .You will be stuffering from shock and may feel worse later so take it easy.
I expect the insurance will ask lots of questions but the main thing is you are ok

Dont beat yourself up about it - it's not as bad as unhitching a trailer with the ponies still inside and having it tip over backwards!! Duh..........

Glad your both OK - shame about the lorry, but it can be replaced, you and your horse cant!!

Have a stiff drink and be thankful that you will NEVER make a similar mistake ever again!!

Just so glad that you and Rosie are ok and what a superstar Rosie is to be so calm in a crisis. Don't beat youself up about it. The very same thing happened to my sister-in-law, she had a side-ramp fitted to their lorry by a very reputable firm and it came down when she was driving along. Once again, luckily no-one was hurt. Hope your insurance pays out quckily for you.

How terrifying for you, you must be in bits. I can't believe the sellers didn't think to make sure it was safe before they let you drive it away since they know the lorry. Please don't beat yourself up too much, these things happen. And as for Rosie, what a superstar she sounds like one in a million!

OMG - you poor thing. But thank you for posting this as it serves as a warning to others to check everything. (as the seller should have done)
Thank goodness you weren't hurt and neither was Rosie - she sounds like a fab horse.

Dieseldog, I'm pretty sure after the policeman told me what was wrong with it. Put it this way, there's not much right with it. It was badly damaged and the chassis has had it they reckon. I will find out soon enough though and I'll have to wait and see about the insurance.

glad all is ok.....
what a star your neddy is!!!!

though i'm not too sure how the Insurance is going to see this...???

Seahorse, depends what happens with the insurance. I'd saved and saved for that box. It was my pride and joy for all of 2 days!!!

I feel so sorry for you, I've been trying to save up for a horsebox for ages now, and I know how difficult it is. I do hope your insurance pays out

Glad you are both Ok, must add though its no-ones fault not yours or the sellers - just as people have said acts as a reminder to check check and double check!

Thanks guys for all your support. I've just been to put her to bed with lots of extra carrots and she seems absolutely fine. I'm so pleased she's ok. I'm really aching now and I bet she is too. I'll give her a day or too off and see how she is.

I wonder if she will ever load in a lorry again?

Do you think the insurance company won't pay out because I should have checked the ramp and its my fault?
