Firstly I apologise for this but need a bit of a rant :(

Took my horse out for a hack on new years day, he was a bit fresh but thought we'd be ok on an unexciting familiar route. Theres a short bridleway we have to go on to make the ride a loop, which was very slippy and downhill. I got off to lead him, something spooked him and he disappeared off back home, leaving me about a mile and a half away following the hoof prints! Luckily he got home uninjured!

Later the same day I was driving carefully around a corner on a narrow lane, someone else came flying down the other way and crashed into me.

Now today I get my horse in to give him some 'love' and he's only gone and lost a shoe and the same leg is swollen. Had the vet out to check its nothing serious and she is fairly confident its nothing but even so :(

Sooo... three days in to the year and I've had enough already, my fragile confidence is being knocked by an overexcitable horse (who I have decided to take shoes off and turn away til spring!) Hopefully things do still come in threes and I've had my lot!

Anyone else had a bad start to the year?
 
Don't fret, I've questioned my sanity in the last week. Beloved went down with severe colic Xmas eve and was in a pretty bad way. He took a turn for the worse again come Friday and was lame as well by Saturday, my paranoia went into over drive and every time I looked at him something else seemed to be 'off'. Hadn't been getting much sleep at all from the worry - I've never worried about him like this before. Sunday I went to see a friend and was well her all about what had been happening and she took this unappropriate time to have a massive go at me :confused: :rolleyes: New Years eve, thought he was look brighter - head was over the door when I came to check in the eve, got a bit closer and saw he was having a nose bleed. And that was it, full scale breakdown!!!! Spent NYE driving myself in sane, running it all through my mind, stressing out and generally falling apart.

It's not just you :p

And 13 is my lucky number, so I'm hoping there is a purpose to this shoddy start .....
 
My 1st ride of the new year today. Got back to yard my 18 month old son came hurtling towards me on his toy story ride on. I was mid dismount to stop child just as horse spun opposite direction. Hit back of head on drive & horse stood on me.
Child perfectly ok. Husband grabbed him.
Horses & children are not the easiest of juggling acts;).
 
It all went wrong for me too New Years day. My 11 yr old daughter and niece wanted to ride the two sec A's in the paddocks. I told them to only walk as it was a bit wet. All was well so I thought it was a good opportunity to do something with my 4 yr old so put his head collar on. Just about to lead him out of the other field when my daughters pony took off with her and came back to the gate at a full out gallop. Totally unexplained and out of character. So unclipped my youngster and went over to put my niece, who is older and more experienced, on the naughty pony and calm my daughter.
Then turned around to see my youngster caught up on the gate and in a blind panic. He had managed to hook his head collar over the gate and through the catch attached to a five foot telegraph pole we use there as a gate post. I tried my hardest to act calm but he pulled the telegraph pole out of the ground, breaking the rails and snapped in half a large paving stone. So lucky that he then freed himself and was completely unharmed. Couldn't say the same about my nerves. So this weekend we have to put right the fencing which was new up last year! I never have them out with head collars on and in just 2 minutes he proved why.
 
OMG Cambrica, how on earth do horses manage these things?

Not saying the rest of you haven't had it bad. I'm just in the camp of having "that horse" that seems to get into stupid situations and don't know how they survive. Yet they can then take one tiny wrong step while walking and end up lame for life or dead. Gah, why do we do it? LOL!

I'm not going to jinx my new year but "that horse" closed out my year by wrapping her leg around her stable chain. At least that was padded and wrapped in a polo. So no cuts or deep wounds. Just bruising around her hock. She was fine on meds for a few days. I was in the feed room when I heard the clatter that sounded like "they must be dead or dying". Got there just as she got up. So glad I bed so deep. I assume the gelding next store " gave her a look or some sass" in her mind only. So moved her.

The worst part is that we have the chains instead of doors as the doors are the epitome of unsafe. A welded on V that has space on either side. Just enough space for a head to get in and never get out again. I rent and asked if we could cut them off. His reply was no. So no other choice really. They've been up for a year now and no issues even with escapes. Until "that horse" did her thang. She completely straightened and snapped one of those heavy duty towing snaps. These horses just love to make you worry.

I hope everything gets a little easier for all of you this year.

Since bad luck comes in 3's I've got 2 more to go... Could be interesting! Maybe only 1 if you count putting the saddle on wrong and nearly getting the girth stuck! 1st thing: Pony escapes from stable:o

The trailer brakes locked but chap who does work for us fixed it.....

Moved ponies all together, rode and led and well behaved......

Two highlands saw grass and no not good enough had to be over electric fence.... Now got a energiser on it and they have lost interest.... Fun that...

Oh how awful - Thinking of you!

Bone cancer is so awful and painful - you did the right thing - got leaky eyes here thinking about it. Sending huge hugs and hope you are ok xxx
