I've owned my horse for 11 years and he's about 18 years old. I've never cleaned his sheath but after reading a recent article on it I asked the 'bean' lady out and this is what she found!

Yes, was in his sheath. I was pretty horrified! He didn't mind one bit that she was fiddling around in there (his bottom lip was wobbling at one point!). She said it would be interesting to see if he goes any different.

Crikey, that's a lot of beans. I've never had B checked although DP had a sedation with a lot of rooting around last year after his sheath blew up overnight. Foreign object was the culprit rather than a bean but it's reminded me that getting them checked out on a regular basis is worthwhile.

Wow, they are massive! I have a rummage around every 6 months with both of mine. On with the surgical glove, bit of ph neutral gel and in I go! Luckily neither of them mind and I have found a couple of small ones and quite a bit of manky straw. Finding something like those would properly freak me out!!

OMG! In over 40 years, I've never had my horses done. Should I? Did yours have specific symptoms? I'd also be interested to know if he goes better.
TIA

Honestly, my mare gets so disgusting between her teats, it's as bad as what the OP found if I don't stay on top of it!
I've no idea if it's normal for mares or not but it's pretty grim.
Suspect your boy might be feeling somewhat comfier after that OP!

"the bean lady"? That's a thing?

I'm up in there with some baby oil and my own hand every 6 months as my guy is yucky down there. Wish we had a "bean lady"!

The lady we used now makes a living out of doing it! Daughter found her on Facebook. She does Wiltshire, Berkshire & Hampshire but I think there are quite a few people doing it now.

Hilarious! But it's pretty easy to DIY... are people squeamish? Worried about getting hurt? Our vets will do it, if you make them... but I've always been too cheap!

When M first started dropping and looking uncomfortable he wouldn't let me anywhere near his manly bits. So vet came out with sedation and a rubber glove. Young vet. Told me she had a new man in her life and was out for a date that night. He keeps asking me what I've done during the day, she said. Today I've had my hand up a horse's bottom checking for impaction, followed by cleaning a horse's willy. It's not the most romantic topic of conversation.....

I shouldn’t have opened this eating my breakfast!
I’ve been intending to have a go and I have a surgical glove and tube of KY that are waiting to be used but I wish I had someone to hold my hand while I do it!

For the £20 the woman charged, I think it was money well spent! I don't think I would have stuck my hand in as far as she did. 😄

Dare i ask how you find one of these bean people? And how do I know they will do a good job? Is there a register of bean technicians?? 😂

My daughter found ours on Facebook but we knew of local people that had used her (and regularly). She said she had been shown how to do it by a vet. Probably word of mouth is best.

I thought beans came out of the urethra?

What is a ‘bean’?
The ‘bean’ is the common name for a collection of smegma in the tip of the horse’s penis. The tube that the urine passes through is called the urethra and just above the urethra is a pocket of space called the urethral fossa and this is where the build up of dirt and grime happens, which results in hardened ‘beans’. When the beans get so big, they interfere with the horse’s ability to pass urine properly, which can lead to all sorts of infections and kidney problems. Generally, when horses have severe beans, they will be in obvious discomfort.

I don’t know if we’ve got a name for lumps that come out of the sheath instead 😂. But I too would use bean to only mean urethra ones.

I’m fairly familiar with the activity, the main issue being that the smell lingers on you for a long time afterwards. Frank needs his checking semi-regularly for SCC lesions so the I’m not letting go until you let me have it method is well practiced here 😂

I have a 17 year old gelding on loan and owner told me NEVER to go near his sheath , he is touchy about his back leg, back problem)
I do worry about it never being cleaned, I hope he has not got anything like that !

I use gloves. However, the water I squirted in the other day ran down my arm and soaked into my rolled up sleeves so I may as well not have worn the gloves!

TP, there's a small "pocket" above the urethra, which they come out of.

Our physio said she thought my chap had a 'bean' which might be accounting for him going slightly unlevel. Had to get the vet as he wasn't letting me anywhere near his nether regions, even after a tube of sedalin, and sure enough she removed two lumps about the size of the OP's (horse's). He is definitely more comfortable and I will get him checked regularly from now on.
