I let my little girl in along with her brother for their tea, when I went to close their stable doors and start the nightly groom etc Fferny turned to look at me and I was presented with this:

Her eye was swollen like a golf ball and oozing yellow gunk, I made up some tea and got some cotton wool to bathe it...

However when I got up close and tried to touch it it was clear she was very sore (she usually lets me do anything to her) her top lid was swollen up so it was about 3-4mm thick and bright red. I rang the vet.

He came and sedated her, then gave her a local anestetic and put some dye in her eye to check for damage to the corena (thank god there was none) he thinks she may have had a horse fly get in there and bite the inside of her eyelid or have caught it on a branch.

Fferny sedated:

She has now got 5 days danilon (sp?) eye drops and my orders are to bathe with camomile tea beforehand. She came around slowly and is now back out with a fly mask on.

Poor baby

Oooh ouchies, hope she gets better soon! Did the vet actually suggest camomile tea? Or just agree you could do it?- you have a very left wing vet if it was a recommendation! :)

Yeah he did recommend it! I said when I first saw it I rushed to make up some tea, but then called him when I realised how sore it was. He replied, "Camomile tea is the best to bathe it with, that before you put the eye cream in to ensure its clean"

In all fairness our vet is really good, he believes in massage, chiroprating, nutritian etc mind you our whole yard uses him so I also think he likes to keep us sweet!!

UPDATE- her eye was open again this morning, and when I went up this eve the swelling has gone down loads :D I'm back up there again later so fingers crossed it may have gone down a bit more!!

Ouch, looks nasty, poor thing. Hope the eye gets better soon.
On a slightly different note, but similar topic, I had to have some fairly major dental surgery yesterday and the dentist said if it feels really sore or bleeds, bite on a warm tea bag for a while - good to see that medical professionals are still able to recommend the basic herbal remedies.

Pleased she is looking better. Just wanted to say i had a pony who only suffered from conjunctivitis. Nothing else all her life until she died. But conjunctivitis every summer until fly masks were invented! She just seemed very sensitive. I just kept a mask on her in the summer months during the day as a matter of course in the end. It might be a course you have to take evry summer if she is very sensitive.

Well done for calling the vet out so quickly. If she had have scratched her cornea and you hadn't had the vet out it could so easily have been a different outcome. As for the vet, I want to munch him!!!
