His lordship has been sprouting cold sore mud fever type things in different areas around his body, on his belly, on his sides, on his legs, in his mane, fortunately not in the tack areas, hard yellowy gold coloured crusty stuff, vet not exactly sure what it is other than it's not mites or insects, so antibiotics and cream at the Mo

nothing has changed with his feed or anything else in the last five years so not reaction to anything new, hoping it's going to go away soon.
Cost me £108.00 up to now

Someone at my yard had exactly the same thing a couple of years ago. It looked like mud fever and the vet thought it was this so they treated the horse appropriately and it just got worse. It turned out that he had developed a food allergy, I think it was to wheat. They hadn't even considered this because his food had not been changed. The owner changed his feed and bedding to completely cut wheat out of his diet and the lumps eventually disappeared. It may be worth asking the vet for an allergy test if things don't improve.

Freddy recently had vasculitis which is basically the horse's own immune system attacking the body and looks exactly like mud fever, could it be that? It responded very well to topical steroids.

Hope he recovers quickly!

Interestingly two of our fillies have had something similar, mainly on their necks and chests though. Vet put it down to fly bites as they are not being fed anything

My mare had something that sounds the same on her nose and legs, vet thought it was to do with pollen and to keep her in for a week and see if it got any worse which it did. He put it down to a allergy or intollerance to something and gave me a steroid cream for her, it did'nt disapear until i moved yards.
I've just had a Iridologist out to her who told me she has a high sugar intollerance, at the time of scabby things appearing she was getting quite a lot of haylage a day and when I moved yards she went back to hay so im thinking now it may of been where her body could'nt break down the sugars properly.

I really must take pics of franks, they tend not to get big enough anymore how big are your boys? feel free to send me a pic!

chestnut too!

Do they start with you being able to see the hair slightly raised, then get increasingly yellow and crusty then the hair can drop out and it looks very sore.
Very like mudfever but on belly, bum, sides, neck. and on his white blaze sometimes. currently has one on his stifle.

I dont know what causes them (has had skinscrapes) they are worse at certain times of year (bad now)sometimes I think they start as insect bites and get infected and sometimes some of them (particularly neck) are if he gets too warm. they are almost like a secondary bacterial infection after a reaction (ps he doesnt get mudfever even on his white legs)

I have found for his the best 2 things are either arthur wason heel cream (sulphur based for mud fever) or sudocrem.- let soften and then I pull the scabs off normally the hair comes with and then clear up quickly If I catch them early they will be gone in a couple of days, if not, like one atm it is getting there but has been there a couple of weeks as it go the chance to spread a bit so the original site is fine now but it has moved.
obv cant tell if yours is the same but I find as long as I run my hand over him to check for them and cream them up when they are small they are easily dealt with. they are not immediately obvious to the eye. As I said they are bad now but he normally perhaps gets one every couple of weeks or so otherwise.
