Well some of you may know we had the vet out to Mo yesterday as she went lame. Vet reckoned abcesss, so poulticed and said to keep her in until he comes out again on Monday with the farrier.

So when we got to the yard this morning, i tied Mo up outside her stable and gave her some hay on the floor while i mucked her bed out. After a while i noticed her mouthing a lot and chewing, but she wasnt eating. So i got my sister to come and have a look in her mouth while i held her and pulled her tongue out. She had a look, then said "OH MY GOD, there's a NEEDLE in her mouth!!!"

So i had a look and sure enough, there was a sewing needle (about 3" long, complete with some black thread!!) stuck in her pallet at the VERY back of her mouth!!

Called some other liveries over and we tried to get it out, but she was panicking, so we rang the vet (out of hours call-out - woohoo!!!). The vet LAUGHED when we told her!!!

But when she realised we were being serious, she was at the yard within 20mins. She had to sedate her, then put the dental clamp on. She couldnt believe it - said it was a first!

She got it out easily once the clamp was on. The thread was gone, as was the eye of the needle, but the vet wasnt too concerned as it was such a TINY part of the needle, and a very short piece of thread. Just said to keep an eye on her.

So that was that! Mo's awake now and munching on some soaked hay.

I'm guessing the needle must have been dropped the other day when i got a sewing kit out to fix Dolly's sun mask. I feel so guilty!

Dont suppose anyone else has ever had this happen?!!!!

Thank god she is okay and vet came quickly! I'm sure she will be fine. Don't feel guilty, accidents happen and trust a horse to pick it up!
No it hasn't happened to me before but our cat managed to get a fishing fly hooked onto his tongue. And the fly was called a 'Cat's Whisker'

Oh Lou! Poor Mo - I bet her mouth is eversew sore. What a busy life you are leading atm - never a dull mo!

Give her a hug from me hun xxx

Crikey she was very lucky and I'm glad to hear that she was ok in the end

I have not had an incident with a needle but last year whilst using one of those safety knives for cutting baling twine with I noticed that the blade had dropped out. I searched as good as I could in the straw bearing in mind I had just put a whole bale in and the horse had a very deep bed anyway.
I tried moving the straw to one side of the stable and just going through it bit by bit. I never found it even when mucking out over the next few weeks.
Trouble was I didn't know whether it had fallen out in the stable or outside and I was worried for ages thinking what if he or another horse/animal/person steps or rolls on it.
I still keep expecting it to turn up one of these days though.

Chumsmum your cat was very lucky too as I fish myself and know how painful hooks can be. The ones I use are sea fishing types and are big sharp and barbed. Have had them stuck in fingers a few times. Worst time was when a dog fish decided to wrap itself around my arm and tangled a rig around my arm too. Taking skin off my arm and driving a hook into my hand. Luckily didn't go deep enough for the barb to go in.

What a freak accident!! I haven't had any incidents with needles, but I did leave a pair of scissors sitting on a ledge in my horses stable - discovered them in his bed the next morning. I was SO lucky he didn't hurt himself on them.

Bloomin heck, that is so freakish!
My grandad always used to say that you tip a bag of carpet tacks in to a horse feed and they would pick out every single one! I have never tried it though!
Like you say it has probably fallen in the hay and any other time could of passed right through with out causing any grief.
Good luck and sending some money finding vibes!!!!!!!!!!!
