had to post - just had dentist - wow!!

ok, so had vet to do my horses teeth 2 weeks ago, she sedated him, slapped a gag on and did his teeth in 10 mins, i wasnt particuallry impressed and taz was still dropping feed etc after, was recommened a dentist by my dressage intructer (who also had a feel of his teeth after vet did them and she wasnt impressed either). so dentist has just been - a little guy in his 60s with his wife - they spent 10 mins just talking to taz, had a feel said his teeth had had only half a job done, spent ages with him and succesfully did his teeth with no gag, no shouting, pulling etc just gentle , singing to him etc i was sooooo impressed it was so amazing i wanted to cry as the vet said she wud never do his teeth without sedation as he is dangerous been so big (16.3), the dentist also spent ages after talking me thru wat hed done, telling me how sharp edges r formed etc etc and it cost me £30 - that is the call out fee alone for my vet. sorry for long post just had to tell!!

good for you. vets are not dentists, any more than doctors are dentists. glad your horse's teeth are properly sorted now.

donadea - it was ken halmes, and his wife moira think they are from selby, cant reccommend them enough

I'm glad you were pleased and they worked well with your horse , however without putting a gag on I dont think they can examine the mouth properly. My dentist always uses the speculum and examines each tooth thorougly as well as the gum before starting anything, without the gag you cant get a proper look.

very interesting - i dont know alot myself so dont shoot me down, but the dentist said that putting a gag on resticts the opening of the mouth and therefore u cant get a full look at all the teeth??

I would be very surprised if they have done a decent job. Can't see without a gag how this would be possible.

I do think that the vet ripped you off as you don't need to sedate a horse to do a normal float, unless it is some sort of psycho.
