Haematoma on stifle, advice please........

My 5 year old mare fell over on the lunge 2 weeks ago and now has a huge haematoma on her stifle. She was fine initially and i worked her until she settled but was very lame the next day. My vet saw her and prescribed bute and antibiotics. She is sound now and the graze is totally healed but i was wondering how long the haematoma would take to go down? My vet said just keep her in gentle exercise and she is living out. My farrier said she was a bit sore on it today when he shod her. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks
 
My old mare fell over on the road & got one the size of a grapefruit on her shoulder. The vet drained it once or twice but it just refilled itself so we left it alone & it did eventually go. Took maybe a month to be pretty well gone? Maybe a bit longer.
 
my boy jumped the stable door as a weanling and ended up with a huge one (melon sized) on his stifle. obviously very big on a little weanling stifle!!

his was there for maybe 2 months? he was never lame on it and my vet didn't want to drain as it can obviously let infection in.

have you tried hot compresses?
 
A friend of mine has a horse currently on box rest who came in about 2 months ago with a massive haematoma on his stifle. Vet attended, prescribed antibiotics. Two weeks later, little change, horse dog-lame still, second opinion sought, horse went for scans and hey presto - two bone chips.

The hope is the chips will be reabsorbed - if not, then they'll need to be removed surgically. He's due to go for a repeat scan next week to see what's happening.
 
I'm sure she hasn't chipped the stifle as she is sound, hope they are reabsorbed by your friend's horse.
I have been cold hosing but not tried hot treatment, thanks, will give it a go. I don't mind how long it takes to go down, i'm just not sure how much work to do with her in the meantime
 
when my boy had a heamotoma i had to have it lanced and he had to go on bute and anti b,s for a week and i had to flush it out every day!
