I 'like' quite a few horsey pages on Facebook and today an advert popped up for mane, forelock and tail extensions for horses. I presume they are for showing purposes (do the judges accept them?)? I don't know the first thing about showing, but is it just me who thinks this is mad? :p

I haven't seen them over here on horses, but I know that tail extensions are used in American showing, if you go onto youtube you will see all the horses will have huge thick (fake) tails!

I don't think it's allowed in showing. I think it's more for dressage, we have a horse at work who had a tail extension when he competed because he had the most horrible little rat tail that never grew, i think it's in the breeding (WB).

I've seen these advertised and recommended them to my friend (whose freisan refuses to grow a forelock 😂) but she said they arnt permited at county level? tbh I don't know how a judge would be able to tell if it's a good match and well fitted because I've never had any judge inspect any of mine in the ring close enough to tell weather they had extensions in or not. wasn't there a case at a large show (equifest??) publicized where a coloured cob had its forelock cut off by some jelouse gobshite before his class and a stall there kindly donated a forelock extension to them for the class which I think they want on to do pretty well in

Cheeky gets!! Wow that's awful. Nasty piece of work. I'll be asking hubby if defacing a horse counts as criminal damage!

I have never used one myself
but i have at some shows here in the UK seen them used, mainly in arab tails

Arab show rules do not allow hair extensions in this country nor can you trim any tactile hair it must be left natural, the rules are different abroad though I am sure the USA and Australia allow hair extensions.

Most Arabs that are seriously shown in this country have long flowing tails that will drag on the floor as they permanently live in a tail bag, so they may look like it's false hair but it is in fact there real tail.

I hope they did catch whoever it was, I can only imagine how devastated the owner must have been (I would have been baying for blood if it was my trad!) it was a few years ago now but it was all over fb and there was a hell of a lot of support and well wishes for the owner, sure others must remember it

oh god I am sure it does go on I just know so many Arabs that do have the most amazing tails so it can be achieved if they are cared for properly, both of mine wear tail bags all year round they only come off for shows lol!

I would use them if my horse had a problem with it's mane like gaps or a condition where the mane did not grow or tail had sweet itch and rubbed out. Showing not so sure as I would be worried the judge might find them and mark me down.

Hi there, just to let you know it was me that supplied a tail and mane for someone who theirs hacked off. Very sad when people stoop to this level.
With regards to "are extensions allowed" well in some classes they are ok. I had quite a few judges comment what a great idea they were and the only time it would be a problem is possible in hand.

Does anyone remember reading a dressage report some years ago in H&H where a false tail fell off and a well meaning spectator phoned the RSPCA ? It made me smile.

A friend bought an event horse recently that barely had any tail. It came with its fake tail as part of the package!!

I knew a pair of lovely matched bay driving horses, full brother and sister, who did weddings etc. Only problem was Clyde had a lovely full tail and Bonnie's was pathetic, so she had tail extensions whenever she was driven with him.

very very common in showing but many wouldn't admit to it, some are so good I bet you'd struggle to see them even up close. I would certainly consider it if I had the money to get a really convincing result

The Fell ponies are very interesting, they can look completely different at the breed show than they do at other shows, as the breed show is extremely strict about these things

The incident at Equifest was an odd one, many think it was a personal thing rather than a competitive thing which would make more sense
