Hair loss and dandruff along neck??

Hi all, might be a bit of a long one I’m afraid.

*I’ll preface this with saying I’ll be contacting the vet tomorrow morning*

I’ve got a wee almost 15 year old, partbred welsh gelding that over the past week or two has developed lots of dandruff along the top of his back and rump, and around the top of the bottom half of his neck. Like, lots of dandruff with some sort of scaly areas (but not like scabs, more like oily dandruff layers) and his hair has just been dropping off in patches in the same areas. It doesn’t seem painful for him and his skin doesn’t seem irritated by it. I’ve had him since November 2018 and before I got him he lived at the yard where he was bred, 4 miles away from where he is now, his whole life. He lives with my other 3 horses (13 year old cob, 10 year old thoroughbred and rising 3 cob X) 24/7, who are all 100% fine. They are always in overnight at the mo and get outside to graze for between 1 and 9 hours weather dependent. When they’re in they have a constant supply of free choice hay (was hay cut from the same land they graze up until 2 weeks ago when ours ran out), as well as their own ration of balancer each. None of them have been anywhere else for the past year and no other horses have been here. All were wormed around 2 months ago and all treated with lice pour on around 2 weeks (I spotted one on my cob X by chance and dosed all of them just to be sure!) He has a rug on at least when he’s out in wind and rain as he never really grows much of a winter coat at all so gets chilly easily. Rug comes off whenever it’s warm enough, and when it goes back on I always make sure he’s 100% dry and given a good brush. Only other skin issue is a couple of sarcoids he’s had since I got him that are under control and nowhere near the ‘problem’ areas. Other than the dandruff and hair loss his coat is smooth and shiny, so the whole thing has been extremely confusing ☹️
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar? Been googling endlessly and can’t find anything that sounds exactly right. Thank you if you’ve read this far and any advice appreciated!

Maybe Neck Threadworms?

There's a Neck Threadworms in Horses group on Facebook. Or give it a Google and see if any of it looks to be as you are describing.

Otherwise I would think a mineral imbalance of sorts. Vet can also tell you if it's just skin related (some kind or funk or contact dermatitis).

Had a google and don’t think it’s neck threadworms, but having slept on it I’m leaning towards it being a vits&mins thing since the problem seemed to coincide with the new hay we got. He’s the hardest keeper out of my four so makes sense he’d be first to show any signs of a deficiency, poor lad!

It sounds like lice to me, you have to treat twice to break the breeding cycle.
Lice cause dandruff and the itchyness makes them rub off their mane.

Sorry I just reread and the hair falling is not in the mane, are the hairless patches circular?

This is exactly what happened to our pony, I'm 90% sure it's lice as I found one but it's hard to see amongst the dandruff (and my eyesight isn't what it used to be).
