Hi All

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can suggest anything to help... every year my horse loses hair on his face and I have to treat it with fuciderm jelly/cream. It only happens in summer and it happened on three different yards over 4 years so i don't think it's caused by anything he's eating. I had the vet out about it the first time and have been able to get repeat doses of the cream as it's the same thing every year. I'm sure he thinks it is an allergic reaction to something. It does improve with the cream. I just wondered if anyone else's horse gets this or if you've treated it with something different as I'm not too keen on the steroidal cream

That was the first year he got it and it's not been that bad since. This year it is about 2/3rds that bad. I was away on holiday and he was being looked after by someone on the yard when it flared up

It looks very much like my horse's face, but he suffers with sweet itch. I use Camrosa ointment which helps.

Looks like sweet itch, my horse looks just like that. He wears a equlibrium fly mask plus a snuggy hoods rug and neck cover!24/7! and he's got no bald patches so far this year.

I use fucidin to treat any sore patches.

He does have pretty bad sweet itch which I forgot to say. I didn't realise that it was SI on his face too

I have Net tex itch stop salve I will try too. Got camrosa as well so at least I have a few things. Currently wearing sudocrem until I get to the vets for Fucidin.

Thanks all

my boys got this too - am using stop itch on it and it seems to be doing the job,. have got some fuciderm though so may try that too.

my mare gets this too, i dont put anything on it, just give her face a really good brush everyday and it seems to get better, in fact its look really good at the mo, but if i miss grooming her face for just one day it comes back!

This used to happen to my NF mare. Vet also hadn't a clue what it was, although thought it was to do with the flies. Only thing that has worked is Forever Aloe Vera Gel.....she hasn't got it since using this

I've got some of that too so can give it a go. I put the Nettex stuff on it tonight so will see how that helps

Be very careful with the itch stop salve on broken skin my very sensitive horse reacted very badly on his face last year and was very sore and bald all summer.

Also forgot to say my horse also seems to be allergic to sweat so have to hose off very thourghly after exercise.

My youngster with mild sweet-itch loses hair on his face just like yours every summer. I treat it with Camrosa and have just bought a full-face fly mask in the hope he might just keep it on (never has before).

Me, me, me!! Well, my horse certainly. We moved down to England 3 years ago and each spring he has lost the hair on the left side of his face (only ever the left!). It grows back eventually. I've had the vet do skin scrapes and had every lotion and potion on it.
This year its the worst it has been , if I wasnt so inept I would post a pic! We've finally got on top of it this year, with an iodine based cream (human one) and a dog fungicidal shampoo. Even though the skin scrapes were negative for ringworm etc, it it obvioulsy, in our case, another fungal infection.
Is your horse itchy? Mine is. It is soo odd though that it is only ever the left hand side of his face. Starts in a small patch by his mouth and has spread upwards.
If you are interested I can get the name of the shampoo/ cream that have worked for my boy.
