Hi there everyone...
I am posting this here to see if anyone has experienced anything similar to what I am about to describe.
The vet is coming out on Monday but in typical fashion I am already imagining the worst case scenario!

My horse has developed a very dry, scurfy skin across his face. When brushed, the scurf and hair on his face comes out in clumps, resulting in multiple bald patches... it is showing no sign of clearing up and I'm getting concerned. It isn't appearing anywhere else on his body, nor does it seem to be causing pain or irritation...

Any ideas?!

Many Thanks in advance!

Have you got any pictures?

I wouldn't do anything until the vet sees it as its on a sensitive area, but my horse had something similar on his bum. I gave him a bath with baby shampoo (so not to irritate) and he's fine now.

Hi, what did the vet say as this sounds very like what happened to my girl in the last few weeks I put it down to rain scald although she has never had it before...
I bathed her in medicated shampoo and treated with aloe vera. Its now nearly all gone on her face and the hair is regrowing and her back is nearly healed too.
Just intrested to hear what they said thanks in advance.

Having had the vet out yesterday to my new horse (as described in the original post), he concluded the hair-loss on his face was due to a combination of :

  • Changing Coat (hair loss heightned however by the following pointers)
  • Poor Management (lack of regular grooming etc.)
  • Poor Diet / Malnutrition

Now he is on a good diet and being groomed regularly, it should clear up as his summer coat comes through.

Hope this is of interest!

Nic
