Hair loss?!

Hi, I’ve attached a picture so you can see what I mean but my mare has lost some hair on the top line of her neck. I think from rubbing and itching herself on the tree but I just want to check it is just that or if anyone else has any other ideas?! There’s one small scab but the rest looks like just broken off fur.

Yes, can’t see any. And can’t think how she’d get lice? I only have 2 horses and they’re looked after very well and have no contact with other horses..?

I'd treat for lice and mites anyway with a pour on treatment like Switch. With a bit of luck that will stop her itching.
She might just be itchy with changing coat or she might just have had an insect bite there but there's also the possibility of it being the start of the sweet itch season if you didn't have her last summer.

thank you. I think I’ll do that. Nope she’s never had sweet itch before. But I guess it can start whenever?!

They can just pick lice up from the environment and its prime louse infestation time so treating her is a good idea and rules it out if nothing else

Are you near any cattle? If she develops any more similar lesions, it could be ringworm. This warmer than usual weather seems to keep the bugs and fungus growing!
