Any ideas what could be causing this hair loss? It doesn’t seem to be sore. I first noticed it a week ago and it was just a small patch - I thought he had knocked himself but today it is looking quite bad.

It could be a reaction to him rubbing his head on something ages ago. I had one get a leg stuck in a leg strap. There was nothing visible at the time, no swelling or heat, but a few weeks later it looked like this.

I wouldn’t worry unless it spreads more or looks sore.

Rainscald is just a name for a skin infection which can happen for a myriad of reasons. Often just a small nick or wound or even just damp conditions. As a first course of action I would probably wash the face with a bacterial/ fungal shampoo or properly diluted weak hibiscrub. Then dry thoroughly. Remove any more loose hair. If necessary I might clip off hair to allow proper cleaning and air drying. However I’d avoid that if possible especially if living out. If it doesn’t start to improve then you would need to investigate further.

Mites out of the hay would be my bet. Mine get it this time of year, once out for the summer and moulted it has gone until the following late winter.

this happens with mine when they get mites, and it is always around this time of year. I get a mite powder from the local equestrian shop and it works wonders.
