I have owned my donkey for 4 years. I got him from some travellers who had him tied to the side of the road. He was in poor condition and very frightened but did still have a nice fairly sleek summer coat. However, since then he has never really shread his winter coat and always looks rather hairy and scruffy dispute now being in super condition and happy as a pig in muck! Any ideas why please ??
 
I have had my donkey for 21 years! He never sheds his coat properly and looks tatty because crows sit on his bum and pull hair out at this time of the year. I think it is maybe a donkey thing. However last year when it was so hot I asked a friend to come and try and clip him, fully expecting problems. He was an angel and looked so cute after a full clip, with the exception of one leg cos the clippers over heated after dealing with all that fluff. I was worried he wouldn't grow a winter coat but he is now back to full fluff, so will probably have to take the clippers to him again if we have another hot summer. Can't really say why your donk would have had a sleek coat when he was in poor condition, but if he will allow it I would try clipping him .
 
Don't blame you they are fab! Mine is a useless, bone idle, waste of space who does what he wants when he wants but I love him to death and wouldnt be without him! Had to pay an arm and a leg to buy him off the gypsy's but couldnt leave him alone tied up by his neck on a piece of old mud next to a motorway - poor Wonkey Donkey.
 
That donkey description sounds familiar. Got mine as a companion to my old pony, needless to say he outlived the pony and we then had to get a companion for the donkey! Since then my daughter came along and now have 2 ponies, a horse and still the donkey. My daughter is convinced he is going to outlive me and she will have to look after him - they have a love/hate relationship, he really takes the p**s with her, when she was little and tried to ride him he used to lie down. As you say love him to bits tho and wouldn't be without him. We had an extension to the house built 15 years ago and the builders still ask after the donkey when they see me!
 
I have the same problem with Doodles! She was on her way to the salami factory (honest) when I got her and was a sorry state with a thick matted lousy coat. That spring she turned into a sleek shiney donk. She has never done so again and I have to clip her every spring
