I want to take OH's mare hunting......she's been before and has done team chasing and stuff so I think she will look after me.....

She's a native type with feathers and a long-ish but tidy mane, its not flapping around her shoulder or anything.....feathers are not too wafty either.....do I just make sure she's neat and tidy or do she have to be plaited? I don't mind doing it but her mane is pretty thick, they'd be the size of golf-balls

....or is a running plait acceptable??

Was planning on skulking around at the back but didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb

When hairy highland goes hunting (not often- she can be a bit nutty) she is fully clipped apart from her legs and some kind of attempt is made to contain her luxuriant mane - a running plait is a good idea

Thanks for that......she has a trace clip at present as I'm getting her fit again...she's not done much for a year or so but I thought see how she goes, might get a half day in later on...if not the fittening will continue, do some XC training next spring when the trailer has its new floor done...then go out and do a bit of cubbing early next season.

I used to hunt a hairy. She jumped with the best of them just lagged behind on any long gallops. I did a running plait which always looked smart, a damm site easier to unplait too!!!! I always plaited her tail right to the bottom and then taped it up round her dock to save her beautifaul full white tail! The only thing I would say is make sure that you dry the feathers afterwards and either bandage up or put some stable wraps on the way home and for that night.
I used to hunt with Badworth before they went with Bramham Moor! Hunt with Pendle now. Rockwood harriers might have a meet close to you. I think that their website has the meet card as a download. Not sure about that though.
Enjoy it and have fun!

I do the same as claracluck when I hunt T – mane in a running plait & tail up like a polo pony’s. It looks smart and is practical, plus it doesn’t take too long once you get the hang of it. I would post pics but am in work, I’ll try to get some up later

I am hoping to hunt Stinky this year and will put his tail up like a polo pony and his mane in long plaits which will then be looped - too much hair for a running plait and I am not great at doing them.

Feather - mud will be brushed off and as covered in oil, will be clean enough to be smart if not pristine.
