Hairy horse & warm weather

My cob is still extremely hairy, and with this warmer weather he is sweating even just doing light work, and even gets a bit clammy overnight in his stable.

Its is obviously too late to clip, but is there anything else I do to make him more comfortable?

Can I speed up the shedding process!?
 
Just give him salt in his feed if he's sweating every day , brush him with a curry comb daily when he's dry to get any loose hair out. If you can leave him out overnight he will be cooler and may not sweat. If he's rugged take it off even if he's clipped, he clearly doesn't need it. If he's unclipped and there's a really hot day he might appreciate a bath to get rid of all the dried sweat which you probably can't brush out of his long coat, only if its really hot though so he dries before the temperature cools in the evening. Don't worry too much, he'll be hot and bothered for a month it two then most of the hair will be gone.
 
I trained a cob that we clipped all summer through. As it was a full clip it did not really notice, we even graded it in around the tail.

I know it is not "correct" but if a horse is working hard and is hairy and hot, it seemed the best solution. The horse was even too hot in his stable, so I guess it was best for him even when he was not expected to work.
 
Its an old wives tail about clipping late ruining the coat!!! We clip ours into April every year and they're coats are fab in the summer!!
 
I have been really keen to clip mine for the last 10 days but haven't dared because of the summer coat. I am doing a working hunter class on my hogged cob in 3 weeks - will I be ok to clip now then, without him looking like a loon?
 
Clipping late can make the summer coat a bit dull and starey by taking the pointed ends off the new summer coat hairs, leaving them blunt, a bit like your legs going bristly when you shave them!
When I late clipped one of mine, you coud see an outline where the texture of the hair was different. If you take it all off of course you wont get that. :)
 
I've had my lad clipped late, and it made no difference at all to his summer coat - really do not think it affects it at all. I would get it off !
 
Interesting, I am having the same issue with a shettie x . Her coat is so thick she is really struggling and rubbing all over the place. we have been using a shedding blade trying to help it on its way . She is semi retired and 21 so reluctant to clip. We are going to give her a bath today and really give her a scrub. She tends to start moulting and shed the lot within a few weeks . Worry about cold weather later , she hasnt got a rug as has never needed one. Mother nature seems to have prepared her for last winters weather rather than this !!!!
 
I took sissors to my mini today - he was doing the strangest rolling scratching his sweaty belly on the floor - it was grim and starting to mat so I chopped it all off. He's only 8 hands and no idea if he'll be clipped - was quicker to trim with sissors (and only v v v small people lying on the floor will be able to see it;s not that neat!!) he was certainly grateful to be able to get some air to his skin!
 
I wouldnt bath a thick hairy mini, the nights are still cool and she wont dry off its bot hot enough, just rbish her with a long toothed brush like a hair brush, it will pull the waiting to moult hairs out.
