Hi all, a quick question for all those with hairy cob types!
Our cob was clipped over winter and has a ridiculously thick coat, clip not grown out yet despite it being done before christmas. Although he's shedding his winter coat it doesn't seem as quick as needed and summer seems to have happened over night. He is stabled at night and this morning was rather hot and itchy and cranky. Last night was out first really mild night here in the south!

He was quite happy once out and I have groomed out as much hair as I can today along with thinning and trimming mane and tail but frankly there's still SO much hair.

He's a hairy beast and generally a very warm horse, anyone got any tips to make him more comfortable as temperature only due get far hotter this week! Help me hairy horse owners, he was looking rather fed up poor boy!

I'm debating clipping mine. She had a trace clip over winter that is no grown out, started moulting in march and is done and in summer coat (small amount of hair still coming out but minimal) however her summer coat is thicker than my old horses winter coat! Today she was sweating just standing still in the field.
I take it yours is naked- can he be out at night and in in the day maybe? I've washed mine off tonight and in previous summers used to just throw a bucket of water over her morning and night in an attempt to keep her cool.

Oh chaps I'm glad I'm not the only one with a lingering thought of clipping! Yes been naked in stable all winter and out for atleast 6/8 weeks as gets hot in a rain sheet and doesn't mind rain!
In during day could be an option but he's a field of 3 so would be out alone at night. Also his stable is in direct sunlight all day so possibly an oven! Sadly we are not allowed 24 hour turnout which is a shame as he seemed happier once out and eating in the shade, but am tempted to pop him under the hose for some relief! He has 2 tub trugs of water over night to make sure he has plenty, but loves to wash his face and moustache in one rather than drink it haha

I clip all year round because there's no way I could ride if I didn't. My cob was clipped on Thursday and she's much happier for it. It doesn't affect her coat quality at all.

This is fab news. Thank you this has been helpful. He currently only has neck and belly off but am tempted to take it higher if he continues to look uncomfy, he was not ridden today I imagine even a plod would of had him dripping!

Dave is sweating his arse off today. He point blank refuses to let go of the fluff on his quarters. I think he knows something I don't.

mine had the lot off this morning ! she had grown a full summer coat, but she's a hardy little Connie and it was as thick as my warmblood cross's winter coat! No way was she going jumping tomorrow with it on!

Mine is a mostly connie with a bit of cob and I caved and clipped him today as his coat was still ludicrously thick and the heat really got to him on thursday when I had a jumping lesson. As I've got SJ tomorrow and Hunter Trials next weekend I decided the hair had to come off. The amount of hair left on the floor after clipping was was ridiculous. And that's not including the leg or head hair as my blades gave up the ghost LOL

Haha so glad to hear im not alone! My mum won't allow the feathers and mane off but I'm considering taking the rest off now as its so thick and I know he won't struggle without. If the weather turns bad again he has an ample choice of rugs but realistically work wise as it is it feels unfair!

I clip all year round, I clipped last weekend even though it was snowing! and thank goodness I did with this weekend as he dies in the heat.

This is encouraging me as our boy with diagnosed with Cushings last autumn and although he has resounded week to one Prascend a day I have been worrying that he had a delayed start to losing his winter coat. It is coming out in handfuls now so it's good to hear that others are still hairy too.

Coblover I wouldn't worry, my non cushings cob shed late last year too, and the horses at work with cushings are only just shedding the coat now which seems to be an endless process 😂

So glad I'm not the only one!! My cob has been sweating buckets, clumps of hair coming out she is rubbing on fencing and it's like she is felting her own fluff into a nice blanket for the birdies 😂 She is gonna get a blanket clip this morning and hopefully I won't make her look stupid having never clipped before. I'm not doing anything this year other than hacking and getting her fit so luckily don't have to worry about what she looks like haha

After my cup of tea I'm off to clip my Connrmara. He has a full hunter clip in winter that has grown out but his summer coat would rival a tb's winter coat! Just has lots of hair bless him. Going to clip, then fly rug him today so he doesn't get burnt but think he'll be much more comfortable.

Another sweaty night in the stable, have asked to leave him out as a one off tonight just for some air flow! Hopefully clipping Tomo or Tuesday, sadly the girl who usually does him has no clippers right now so I'm on the hunt for a pair if anyone has any suggestions for a pair up to the job!

Very valid point about burning missjessica I foolishly hadn't thought of that possibility!
