I have my horses at home. Up until this summer i just had my little shetland and the fields were fine. Different story now I have a shoe wearing 16hh ISH! We have clay soil which is terrible for draining. I have a two acre field full of grass which I have taken them off as it was getting churned up. I have assigned my half acre top paddock as the sacrifice paddock. Its completely churned up but I have a large round bale of hay under a cover so the horses are happy. They come in about 8pm until 6am to get out of the mud and they have adjoining field shelters so they can go in and get out of rain and mud during the day. My local farmer has said to chain harrow in the spring and it will be fine.....we shall see!
