Hello,
First time I've ventured in here to post, but often look at some of the wonderful reports and pictures you post.
Just wondering if you can help me with this. Posted in NL, but no response so far.....

As title really. My teenage son has been given a wonderful opportunity to do some dressage competitions on one of his instructor's horses (all 17'2" of it!!). To start with it would be unaffiliated, but not kiddies stuff if you know what I mean. Will he be alright in leather (not suede or tassled ) half chaps and matching jodphur boots? His feet have grown 2 full sizes in the last year or so and are still growing, so I'm reluctant to buy him long boots at the moment.

I haven't done any dressage for a few years as currently no horse to compete on, so just wanted to check the up to date acceptable attire.

Many thanks. :)

He'll be fine. I'm short & fairly petite so find it hard to find long boots without spending a fortune. I've got a smart set of Ariat short boots & gaiters to compete in. I've showjumped & dressage'd in them.

Totally fine!! My friend competes my horse in leather sort boots and gaiters due to not be able to wear long boots due to fused ankle joints, you can hardly notice the difference, as long as it all matches there is no problem. Hope your son enjoys his dressage!

Yep, and it's hardly noticeable as a difference. Sister only got her long boots last year when it became apparent she had finished growing, and in all honesty you can hardly tell the difference between the photos of her in long boots and her in boots and gaiters!

gaiters are fine (zip at the back), half chaps (zip at the side) are not and specifically stated in the rules as not (even leather ones). You might get away with it depending on how low key the dressage comps though - prob best to check with the secretary than risk getting eliminated. absolutely no prob with gaiters though - lots of people wear them.

That's not true surely?! I did RC areas in leather chaps with a zip at the side. They checked every single competitor and those wearing leather were fine regardless of zip position. Those not wearing leather ones were made to remove them

nope check the RC rules - leather gaiters are allowed, chaps are not. Gaiters are also more rigid and smart, you can get leather chaps with zips up the back that just dont look the same. I dont have time to find links just now but there was a thread about this last year and I posted schedules links with the rules. It really depends on how strict your local RC is, tbh I doubt anyone would say anything at my local club but certainly for area's etc they would.

Thanks for all of your replies. He is a very lucky boy. At 14 I used to get given all the bucking, bolting, napping ponies to ride. He gets an ex 2 star eventer. :)

It looks like gaiters it is then, I'll try and pick some up cheap on ebay or even some second hand long boots. Or maybe I should just stop feeding him so he doesn't grow any more. :D

As long as the leather is the same and not suede, with no decoration, then it wont matter where you zip is.

Chaps are usually suede so this would be why they are referenced...not because of the zip.
